We are staying at Tradewinds Pardise Villas in Jan/05. I would like to try and fish from shore or the peir. Any suggestions as to what to bring. Should I bring my own fishing pole and equipment. Do you need a license to fish and how much is it. THANKS

No license needed. Although there are many great fishing guides that furnish equipment, to fish on your own, bring your pole and some gear. Lead weights, hooks, and leaders.

hunter45 dock fishing can be spotty , good ,one day bad another.need to try diferant spots and docks .but some hotels frown on you fishing from there pier as there guests snorkel there .light line ,spin tackel ,small hooks ,a split shot , work .you will catch a mix bag of fish some mangrove snapper .hang by docks ,as well as small grunts .use cut up sardines or cut up shrimp, high tide the best .but for best day there go out on a boat with a guide half or full day at cheap prices compared to state side prices .I use fishingsanpedro.com the famous capt bicho. but there are a few great guides here and most will insure you a action packed day. tight lines to you and good fishing ,go live the dream and enjoy..

Hunter, I just got back, stayed up North. Fished off the dock almost everyday and caught tons of fish, mostly snappers. Used Sardines, buy right at the Caye Mart. Need sinkers and # 3 hooks are good. Bring your own rod and reel. They are very expensive in Belize. In fact you may be able to sell it or barter w/ a tour operator if you don't feel like bringing it back home.

Ah, once again we've failed to carefully read the question. H45 only asked if he can FISH from the shore or pier. The answer of course, is a resounding YES! You can!!

Catching, however, may be another story. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. But, lest we forget, catching is not always the reason for or desired result of fishing. The very act, in and of itself, can be its own reward, or, in some cases, simply the reason to be out there alone, enjoying the day. The occasional pesky pescador pecking at one's terminal tackle might well be an unneeded and unwanted distraction to an otherwise peaceful process, no?

In that case, simply any old rod and reel filled with semi-castable line will work just fine. A suitable nut (the bolt kind) or just a worn rock with a hole in it, heavy enough to keep a slight bend in your rod, will suffice quite nicely--and save money on bait, unless required as a prop.

Unless you really want to catch fish. Then the above replies are excellent bits of advice. laugh
