I have been asked to bring a computer to the island and have agreed to it. I was going to put it with the rest of our luggage but now wonder if it will be ok. Does anyone know if the x-ray they use on the luggage will hurt a computer. This is not the same one they use for carry on luggage.

X-rays will not hurt it, or any other electronic device. Magnetic fields will, however. laugh

Physical impacts will destroy it. I would only ever bring a computer either as hand baggage or, if in the hold, very clearly marked (and protected) as VERY FRAGILE.

Best to pull the hard drive and bring it as carry on. The rest of the components should stand up fairly well, I've done this a couple of times without problems.

I even had diabetes drugs stolen from my baggage by AA "security" staff in Miami recently. I don't think I've ever flown through Miami without something going missing. Has to be the worst airport in the world, and I've seen quite a few. Especially bad now that you're not allowed to lock your baggage - the catch is that unless your baggage is locked your travel insurance won't be valid.

I use zipties and haven't had a problem, whether going halfway across the world and back, down to Florida and back or the Caribbean and back. On the other hand, I've never yet had to go through Miami.

Also, available nowadays are special locks that can be set by the owner but opened by security, then relocked after the search. You will be able to tell if your lock has been opened due to an indicator on the lock.

Who do you think is ripping stuff off? The TSA employees manning the bomb scanners, or the baggage handlers?

What?

I've never had a single item--not one--taken from my luggage, locked or unlocked. And you expect me to believe that EVERY SINGLE TIME you go through MIA you have something stolen?

After the standard TSA search, I'm always allowed to hand the locks to them and they put them back on; even at MIA. The ONLY exception to that was in Albuquerque, New Mexico once where they had no visible TSA agents and told me "they were in the back" and I'd have to remove the locks and check my luggage. I refused to remove them with the understanding that the mysterious TSA agents "in the back" might cut the locks off to inpect my bags. I took my chances and my locks came back intact, with nothing missing from my bags.

I think that, if I always (or even ever) had anything of value stolen from my bags, I'd at least file claims, write letters and, most certainly, use another airline. What was the result of that process?

We do, you know, have a choice when we fly.
