Lots of places don't accept Amex, primarily because of the high rate businesses pay here for accepting the card,(a fee we DO NOT pass along to customers--just to avoid that one) that said, many places do (accept/and or pass along) just ask when the time is right i.e. if checking in to a hotel, then check in is the time, when at a restaurant, then before dining (if you have no other means) or when getting the bill.
I know I am not the only place taking Amex.

I have used Amex at a LOT of hotels in Belize, including some in San Pedro, and at a few restaurants. Also, most car rental companies accept it. Amex is not as widely accepted as Visa or MC in Belize, but much more widely accepted than Discover.

About the Amex gift card, I'm not sure. Probably not widely accepted, and I imagine a lot of places have never even seen one, as they're pretty new.
