Check out the Olympus C770 - great intermediate price ranged camera - 4megapixel, 10x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom. Couple it with the PT-022 Underwater housing and ya got a sweet deal. Should be able to pick up both for under $650

We have an Olympus Stylus 400 digital, which we love (had the 35mm version before it, compact, rugged, has zoom and self contained). We just got the underwater housing for x-mas and haven't tried it yet, but can't wait. I think the housing cost around $100, it looks really funky, hope it works, called: PT-016 Underwater Housing for Olympus Stylus Digital Series Digital Cameras.

I have a Canon S500 with a Canon WP-DC800 waterproof case; ordered it all off Amazon. Used it in AC in July. I was satisfied with the u/w pics. The case was easy to use, easy to operate all the buttons, and never had a problem with leakage. One problem I had a few times was I couldn't see the viewfinder while underwater. It wasn't a fogging problem either. Perhaps it was the way the sunlight was coming through the water onto the u/w case housing? I never figured it out. It only happened briefly a couple of times.

The camera itself is small and compact which was what I wanted. The flash was a little weak on land if you were taking night pics over 12 feet or so. Not an uncommon problem with a lot of the compact cameras.

Also if you happen to go parasailing with Tony bring your camera in the u/w case when you go up. Have him dunk you in the water, and try to get a picutre while you're waist deep in the water. It makes for kind of a neat picture.

klc,

Have you used it u/w? Probably another REALLY silly question. I'm looking for one to replace SWMBO's Sea and Sea 35mm that I bought her four years ago. Keeping in mind that technology is not exactly her strongest asset. (Which I will happily trade off for her other positive talents)

Chooch - it's a piece of cake. I looked around awhile, talked to some people I know - those who do and those who sell. For the $$, this thing is the best bang for the buck out htere, IMO. The cam itself is very friendly and also lets you be creative - more than a point & shoot, yet not as fully featured as an SLR type digital. Housing is top notch - functional, user friendly and easy to maintain. I wouldn't think twice about it.

Spec it out at http://www.olympusamerica.com/

A guest here now has the Olympus C770 in the PT-022 housing. He's very happy with it, though he was suffering from a lot of condensation. The housing has the advantage over the WP-DC800 that you can fit a filter to it - impossible on the Canon. But I use the Canon case with an S500 Powershot and am very impressed with the results. With all these compacts you have to remember it's not an SLR.

I have a question! I use my regular little 35 mm canon in a great waterproof case while snorkeling.

The pics come out ok but not great. Should I use the flash??? I haven't been but i think i heard somewhere I should.

all depends upon the light, depth, water clarity wetc - but I wold definitely give it a try. Can't hurt. Some of the U/W housings won't permit that, however.

I just bought my 16 yr old granddaughter the "Lomo Frog Eye Underwater Camera" (under $60 I just noticed at Amazon...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...)and much better quality than a throw away, in addition to being more ecologiclly correct. Can't wait to see how it performs with the U/W flash
