Nope, not for a day trip, although www.amigosdive.com has run trips from Ambergris to Gladden Split off Placencia. Its not practical and I assume, it was an overnight trip. We see them throughout the year off of Turneffe.

Hello Kitty - You really need to plan to stay in Placencia or Hopkins to do the whale shark thing and better check on reservations if you plan to do it this year as the season is only a few days before and after a full moon in March and April, sometimes May. The reason for staying that far south is Gladden Spit where the whales migrate through is way the heck south and it is even a bit of a ride from Placencia in small boats and often rough waters.

Also, even though the whale sharks pass through there is no guarantee of sightings. Not to sound like the bearer of bad news but you really need to plan a trip of this magnitude to increase the possiblity of a sighting. Do a google search and you will find the info you are looking for on the season, places to stay etc.
Hamanasi is a nice place in Hopkins with a dive shop on site for such trips. The resorts in Placencia can run the gamut from basic to luxeand Seahorse Dive shop is the shop to go with for trips there.

With the sightings being around a full moon you could stay a few days in that part of Belize and spend the rest in AC. It's a good way to see the countryside.

Good luck in your pursuit and safe diving.

We do occasionally see them off San Pedro, but rarely and unpredictably.

Kitty... Try Utila in Feb/Mar. We have been there several times and have seen whale sharks every time. Go to Utila.com and check out Laguna Beach Resort... A fabulous place that will put you on great dives and whale sharks guaranteed (almost!<G>).

Hi all,
I'm setting up a dive trip for whale shark photography. I'm thinking of March, 2006. Is that too early for sightings at Gladden? What do you think? Would you expect the winds to be very bad in March?

Naturally, I'll spend some time in San Pedro. I'll probably kick around on Caluker for a day or two and take the Hummingbird highway down to Placentia.

List members are welcome to tag along for any parts of the trip, of course.

Dan,

These are the dates with the highest probability of shark sightings with the best chance 3 days before and 3 days after the full moon. April 10 - 24, May 10 - 23 & June 8 - July 21.
Placencia is the best area to stay, but there are only so many that they let into the preserve in pursuit of seeing the whale sharks.
