I read a whole lot on Ambergris Caye and have come to two main questions, I can't find answers...

1) Can you rent kayaks to go out to the reef to snorkel even if you don't stay at a place that has kayaks? If so, any recommendations... (And Catamarans? Same question...)

2) What would be a good father/son place to stay within the 1.5miles of Pedro but out of the dust, etc... Looking for a pool, bar and fun atmosphere... Money is not an issue... Fun is the issue... Reccomendations -Ramons? / The Palms? / Bana Beach? / Other?

Thanks for your help...

It may just be me, but I'd never consider floating (paddling) out to the reef to scuba or snorkel. Boats (big and small) are coming and going all day and into the evening. You're better off hiring a boat to take you there or actually to a place more suited for that kind of recreation. Sorry, I don't know where one could rent a catamaran.

Hmmm...1.5 miles South of San Pedro puts you at Banyan Beach. Nice, may work for you. When it comes to AC, the atmosphee is constantly moving about depending on what day and time of day it may be....... Try some of the sites (web) for the places you mentioned in your post to see if that works for you and then look at others.

I have rarely seen, talked or heard from someone who wasn't totally Belized, no matter where they stayed. Actually, you and the guest at whatever accomodation you stay at make the atmosphere, right?

8 more days til I return....

Hobies and Kayaks can be rented at Sailsports on the beach at Holiday Hotel along with windsurfers. People kayak out to the reef all the time and I can't recall a single incident where anyone ran into trouble with a boat (swimming is a different matter).

As long as you stay on the beachfront you won't have a problem with dust. If it's a father/son deal you may want to think of Mayan Princess, it's right in town so if you want to do things apart then transportation is no longer an issue. Holiday Hotel, Palms or Ramons would all make good choices as well.

i've stayed at ramon's and the palms, which are both just south of town, the ideal location, imo.
i LOVE having the convenience of a condo at the palms and the people there are wonderful.
i'll be there in may and june again this year and recommend the palms.

You may want to try winging it. There are a lot of nice places to stay within your parameters.
Consider Exotic Caye too, good lively bar and pool.
a couple doors down from Coconuts, another lively spot. They are all on the "Lodging"link on this page.
There is a detailed map on the Lodging locations via the "Home" link at the top of this page too.
Click on the "Maps" link on that page then "Big list of maps".
You'll have a great time! eek
