How did you make out fishing from shore?
Posted By: falcos Re: Fish3d? - 03/17/05 09:59 PM
Go to the split at night. There are places that rent poles and sell bait and the hardware stores have line, hooks and weights.

Regarding the split at night. There
is a bar there that has lights that
shine into the split. You will see tarpon
and many other fish. I tried everything
artificial I could. I even chummed
with what the locals call "sardines"(probably
Pilchards)
and then floating a whole sardine .
I didn't even get a bump. I saw and spoke
to many who tried and had no luck.
Ask the locals and they will tell you that
the fish in the split at night are educated.
My theory is that they are feeding on
shrimp. If you could get live shrimp somehow
or bring some frozen whole shrimp I think
you could slam them. You can however catch
snappers from the other docks around the island, evening being the best time.
I did see bonefish around the west side
of the island in the early morning but never
made an attempt to catch them. Tight lines
and best of luck.

Frozen shrimp is quite easy to buy at the grocery store.

If its the whole shrimp with the head, shell etc still intact I would give that a
shot.

I caught several Kingfish and a Nurse Shark( I let the shark go (very gently) Be careful and watch. Do fish outside the shadows, into the dark.

Thanks guys, I'm not expecting miracles but hope to pass some time fishing.

Falcos,
You got Kingfish at the split? You are
my hero!
Posted By: falcos Re: Fish3d? - 03/20/05 09:36 AM
Several others, while there, did.

I looked at those shrimp for you guys. They are headless. You can get headed ones or live at the shrimp farm near the city.

Keycocker,
Now you tell me...lol
This means I will have to come back soon,
now that I know where to get shrimp!

Kind of a long haul for bait isn't it?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Fish3d? - 03/21/05 11:53 PM
i've caught fish at the split using sprat as bait.

i've caught fish elsewhere in belize using frozen, defrosted shrimp.

snapper loooove shrimp.

i just use a baited hook + bobbin = handline.
i was taught by a friend on tobacco caye and have had some pretty good luck at times for an inexperienced fishing type.

just at sunrise is a good time to go. be careful at the split---lots of stuff under the water for your line to become tangled on. i've spent my share of time diving to retrieve my hooks!

good luck!

yes, its a long haul but right now if
I want to go fishing I have to drill a
hole in the ice! Plus I want to test my
theory. I think live shrimp would get those
Tarpon in the split to bite...along with whatever else is in the neighborhood.

I'll try the shrimp when I head down in a couple of weeks. I'll also bring a sabiki rig to catch bait fish.

Not that my rods will be heavy enough to actually land a tarpon of any size.

The Tarpon in the split, at least the ones
that I saw averaged about 18-15 lbs.
I've caught 60 lb Tarpon on very light
tackle. If you can avoid getting broken
off on any objects I don't think you
will have a problem. Looking forward to
your report(s). Best of luck

Remember, Tarpon are Catch and Release!
Posted By: daveb Re: Fish3d? - 03/26/05 02:54 PM
I don't know what I would do with a tarpon other than release it.... with pleasure. I'm heading down in a week and will either post from there or upon my return.
