10.000 dollar reward - 10/09/09 12:51 PM

Lauren Reardon-Smith, Founding Member, Crime Stoppers Belize
“We are here in solidarity that enough is enough and the Board discussed that we would be giving a ten thousand dollar reward to any information leading up to the arrest and conviction of the culprit. The ten thousand dollar donation is being channeled through crime stoppers but it is actually through the generosity of Lord Michael Ashcroft himself. He was the chairman and founding member of Crime Stoppers in the U.K. and he is very much committed to the program. He has given us fifty thousand dollars for high profile rewards of which this is one of them.”

Well with that amount of money being offered,$10,000.00, they better make darn sure that they get the 'right' person, as there will be people turning in others, just to pick up the bucks. And I hope that it be used against a certain 'type' of people, as I know that racism is an issue in Belize....not just on CC....but yeah, I have seen it! Usually from the police force, so thank God they are going to be replaced. I hope before Christmas!!

From what I heard, they arrested the person in Orange Walk but he has not been charged. However, this case has not been closed yet until they come to an ultimatum with their investigations and charge the person accordingly.

Below is an excerpt from this week's San Pedro Sun newspaper:

Residents demanded justice in solving the murder of Lorleen Young. Over the weekend, Orange Walk Police arrested a suspect wanted in connection with Young’s murder. According to Inspector Selvin Tillet of the Orange Walk Police Formation, based on a wanted poster circulated by the Caye Caulker police, officers spotted and arrested Edgar Coronado also known as “Campari” for questioning. Coronado was arrested last Friday night on Main Street in front of the Scotia Bank in Orange Walk Town and escorted to Caye Caulker. On Wednesday, October 13th, the Officer in Charge of the Caye Caulker Police Station, Sergeant Dirk Dyer explained to The Sun that even though they have detained Coronado for questioning, he could not confirm whether Coronado would be charged for the murder. When asked why, Sergeant Dyers stated that Coronado is just one of two main suspects and investigation into the murder continues.

I also forgot to add that I hope and pray that the person responsible will be caught and soon enough. This incident has cause our residents to be on their p's and q's and it's a sad situation now to be locking our doors now when we used to sleep with our windows and doors opened at night some years ago. Let's all hope for the best for our lovely La Isla Cariñosa.
