from corozal, tues 2pm - 08/21/01 10:29 PM

Relatively little rain --

But really incredible gusts of wind -- like mini-twisters or something.

Corozal had a storm surge -- must have been at least 4 ft hi.

Toni's Marina sea wall is 3/4 gone!

We reset the boat -- it had got pushed about 1/8 to sea -- dragging its
anchors.

Place around my house is a real mess -- lots of cleaning up to do.

The weather was great this morning -- but great heaping black clouds
closing in from all direction. Just as we left -- some rain came -- but
right now nothing.

Skies greatly overcast though.

The horizon towards the west is extremely black - -as well as to the North.
A band of dark skies also advancing from the east.

We still all have power -- but hard to make internet connection. And many
the complaint regarding that in Coro.

Good old BTL -- you can always depend on them letting you down in a crisis
-- and making sure no one else is ever going be around to compete with them.

Shame on Belize and Belizeans for letting that situation continue!

At the very least -- we should be allowed private satellite dishes. It
probably will amount to a life and death matter at some point -- and not
that far away either.

According to:

http://kauai.nrlmry.navy.mil/tc-bin/tc_home

The eye of this storm pased right through Corozal/Xaibe area -- I can
believe that!

The big breeze hit at around 12:30 - 1:00 AM and quite around 3:00 - 4:00
AM Aug 21.

It was much stronger than expected.

Oops -- rain just started -- again --

Download the large size visual.

You will see the double Whammy coming up -- just to the South East of SP --
and looks like it is another pass-over plotting for SP and Corozal -- just
like the last.

The GOB lifted the crisis status -- and immediately two skiff loaded up
with Pedrianos heading back home -- into the eye of this follow-up storm.

I tried to warn them -- but nobody is listening -- the GOB says it is OK now!

Hope we do not get to hear about 50 or so people gone missing!!

They were getting ready to board when I left (disgusted). Anyone with eyes
in their heads could see the great storm clouds to the far west. The rain
was crossing the bay as I took that last look -- you could not see anything
but a deep gray wall past Cirro ruins -- and as I was slowly driving away
-- the first sprinkling started.

Also -- sea breeze from the east had picked up greatly in just a few
minutes with heavy chop coming right away,

I only hope they changed their minds!!

This at 1:30 or so PM.

After spending one hour downloading all the maps at 9600 baud -- I see the
danger is worse than I suspected. But to late to drive back now and warn
anyone.

Slow I-net during crisis can make the difference between life and death!

Two 26 ft Mexican Skiffs -- loaded -- may be out there in deep trouble as I
type -- right now.

Marty and I have been kibitzing about this insidious double whammy effect
for 24 hours now --

Download the above ref and see for yourselves!

Apparently -- water taxis loaded with passengers are leaving Belize City --
right into this -- as well.

what happened??

Probably not even the weather office here in Belize has good WWW connection
-- due to BTL -- and now we pay for it!

This storm has been jumping around -- breaking all rules. The only thing we
had going for us was the WWW so we could have up to the minute real time
views of what actually was going down.

But BTL had to play their power game ---

And a few hundred people going to San Pedro will probably be paying for it
-- just hope the price is not to steep!

If any of those boat captains could have seen what I am seeing they would
never have cast off!

I have been at for 20 minutes now trying to "connect" -- between busy
signal (yes -- to the server) and dirty noise knock-outs -- and finally
making it and the server playing dead -- having to get off and try again.
Locking modem to 9600 -- etc -- etc --

We should be going back to smoke signals or something soon here in Belize!
