On Wednesday January 29th, area representative for Cayo Central, Hon. Rene Montero along with Japanese ambassador to Belize, His Excellency Yasou Takase

And the chairman of Buena Vista Village, Eddy de la Rosa, officially cut open the ribbon to declare the Buena Vista resource center opened.

The 26'X80' structure was constructed at a cost of $245,852 through grant funding from the Japanese government along with counterpart funding by the Government of Belize. Along with the building there are also walkways and a perimeter fence.

The building was constructed for use by primary and high school students as well as the community of Buena Vista in general. According to Minister Montero, the resource center will have a computer lab and library which will serve some 180 students during normal school hours. In the evenings and weekends, it will be used by over 35 high school students from the community. This resource centre can also be used in promoting and encouraging adult education added Hon. Montero. The building will also have a multipurpose section which will be used for extra curricular activities including meetings of the village council and the women's groups, farmers and other social groups. Public health clinics can also be done in the building. Adding to the multi-function of the center, it can also double as a hurricane shelter. This then, will be one of two such shelters available to the people of Buena Vista.

During his address to those gathered, Hon. Montero appealed to the residents to cherish and protect the Center. He added that in order for this to take place, a steering committee will be empanelled to supervise the administration the center.

"As your Area representative, I envision that this Resource Center will serve as a critical channel for children education, adult education and training and as a significant channel for public information awareness and social development for the entire Buena Vista community" he stated.

The residents of Buena Vista Village were the recipients of a newly-constructed resource center. The 26 x 80 feet structure houses a furnished computer lab and library along with a multipurpose section.

Funding for the project, which totalled BZ$245,852.00, was provided by the Government of Japan via its Grassroots and Human Security Grants Project (GHGP).
