The Maya are fighting the war along the southern border of Belize just as FCD is within the Chiquibul.

Press statement from the Maya Leaders of Southern Belize

The Toledo Alcaldes Association and the Maya people applaud the efforts of the Government to investigate incursions and take action to protect the integrity of Belize's national territory and resources, and express their commitment to continue to do their part.

In 2018, after Guatemala held its referendum on the territorial dispute, our Maya communities along the Belize-Guatemala border saw a surge of Guatemalan incursions into Belize. Our border villages and their Alcaldes and Village Councils quickly organized and with support from the TAA/MLA collaborated with the Government of Belize to address those incursions. Since then, Guatemalan incursions are constantly monitored and reported. While incursions from San Vicente to Machakilha has almost been non-existent, we have received reports of growing incursions north of San Vicente, San Jose and Na Luum Ca villages, primarily targeted at the Colombia River Forest Reserve.

In 2020 through a collaborative effort between relevant government agencies, community representatives and conservation partners, a reconnaissance of the area provided first-hand daunting evidence of Guatemalan incursions into Belize and the pillage of our national patrimony. We applaud the work of the Government of Belize to fully investigate these incursions and take appropriate actions including the removal of illegal settlements, pastures and other farming activities confirmed within Belizean territory. We remain committed to collaborating and doing our part in ensuring that Belize's territorial integrity is protected, and that our national patrimony is not exploited.
