We also took the opportunity to ask about the party leader about PUP Mayor Bernard Wagner and his first allegation of impropriety in City Hall.

You’ll remember that 2 weeks ago, he admitted in an interview with 7News that he was writing cheques to himself to distribute as social assistance to needy City residents who visit his weekly clinic.

Whether well-intentioned or not, it’s not exactly a shining example of accountability - and, in fact, it may be unlawful. So, we wondered what Opposition Leader John Briceño, his political boss, had to say, given that Briceño regularly criticizes the Barrow government about a lack of transparency.

He told us that he is satisfied that Mayor Wagner realized that the practice was irregular, and that he has since discontinued it:

Hon. John Briceño - Leader of the Opposition
“Well, he brought it up to my attention and immediately and he quickly realized that whatever help you want to do to help the Belizean people, the residence of Belize City that obviously there are more transparent ways of doing this. I think we need to start off by congratulating him in trying to do something positive. Yes, he recognized quickly the way that he was doing it is not the proper way and he has corrected that and we need to recognize that. That he's man enough to say okay yes we need to find how we will be able to give the assistance, whatever assistance we can give to the many residence of this city."
