Belize Promoting Active Citizenship, Belpac has partnered with Estereo Amor to host the first ever Mayors Forum in Orange Walk. With municipal elections set for March next year and the campaign machineries getting into gear the group thought this time would be opportune. While the discussion will be between Orange Walk Mayors, the objective is to make the general public aware about the roles and functions of a Town Council, and the roles and functions of the Mayor and the challenges associated with managing the affairs of a municipality with focus as well on what it takes to ensure transparent and accountable municipal governance. It is hoped that through the mayor's forum more residents will become involved with the affairs of their town. The forum is set to take place at the Gala Lounge in Orange Walk Town on December 1st and will be broadcast live on Estereo Amor.

"It is not a debate; it is a discussion a d the idea is to based on the experiences of these Mayors, to see what issues affect our town, what different solutions they have put forward in the past to address some of these problems and challenges. It is one way that hopefully residents of the town could have a better idea on how a town, a municipality is managed and maybe give the aspirants for political office for town council to get some good ideas. We thought a Mayors forum would be a way to discuss ideas in a non confrontational manner."

While the discussion will be between Orange Walk mayors, the objective is to make the public aware of the roles and functions of a town council, the roles and functions of a mayor and the challenges associated with managing the affairs of a municipality with focus as well on what it takes to ensure transparent and accountable municipal governance.

"The plan we have is to have one or two moderators, respectable people that can engage the mayors in discussion; a few questions, their experiences, the challenges they faced etc. and with that in mind we are inviting two past PUP mayors and two UDP mayors including the incumbent Mayor Phillip De La Fuente. The other three mayors we invited include Elodio Aragon, Ramon Cervantes and Rick Burgos."

It is hoped that through the mayors' forum more residents will become involved with the affairs of the town. The forum is set to take place on Thursday December 1st at the Gala Lounge and will be broadcast live on Estereo Amor.
