Belize voted best on women's issues

Belize's advances on women's issues such as domestic violence, women power,
decision making, institutional strengthening, poverty and health were
highlighted as best practice at last week's CARICOM women's conference in
Kingston, Jamaica. Belize was also recognized for it's dedication to the
advancement and empowerment of women.

Human development coordinator Christy Castillo represented the women's
department at the meeting, which reviewed the progress of women's bureaus
of the CARICOM countries as a follow-up to the 4th World Conference on
Women held in Beijing in 1995. Last week's conference also considered the
area of women's education.

The evaluation of performance indicates that there is still much work to be
done towards gender equality and equity, and the CARICOM delegates set out
to create a strategic plan of action for the next five years. They decided
to focus on three issues, health, especially AIDS and sexual and
reproductive health; education; and economic empowerment and poverty.
