Sugar Cane Season getting on track - 03/30/11 03:20 PM

[Linked Image] And in the north, after numerous hitches, the 2011 sugar cane season appears to be getting back on track. The Belize Sugar Industries Tower Hill factory was temporarily closed in February when both turbines at the BELCOGEN power plant malfunctioned. It reopened on March fifth, when one turbine was fully repaired. The second broiler has now been returned to Belize from Guatemala, but it is not yet in operation until a static seal is repaired next week. The inflow of quality cane from farmers has been consistent since the reopening of the factory, but the re-commissioning of the second turbine is expected to boost the processing. Meanwhile, the production target of one hundred and fifteen thousand tons of sugar is still within reach if the weather is not a deterrent when the rainy season sets in.

Operations have returned to normal at the Belcogen power plant at Tower Hill. Operations were halted after there was a problem with the turbines. The first turbine was returned to service on March 6 which allowed operations at the sugar factory to resume. The second turbine which required more extensive work was returned to service on April 14 restoring the Belcogen power plant back to full capacity. According to BSI the technical issues that led to a shutdown of the turbines have now been fully resolved.
