Press Release, Belmopan. December 14, 2011 - At this time of year, when we celebrate the miracle of Christ's birth, the Ministry of Health in partnership with the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) has its own Christmas miracle to report.

A little over a month ago a mother gave birth to her first baby in a small private hospital in Belize - the baby was fine but something went terribly wrong for the young mother. She developed a massive infection and the family decided to rush her to a hospital in Mexico.

After weeks of extensive care, the Mexican specialists admitted defeat telling the heartbroken family that there was nothing more that they could do. They advised the family that they should bring her home and wait for the end.

The public hospital in Corozal Town assisted in moving the desperately ill young woman to Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan and here God intervened as he does in so many miraculous ways. The doctors and nurses saw a spark of life and insisted that hope was not lost.

They persuaded the distraught family to let them try once more and the young mother was transferred to KHMH, the people's hospital.

Day and night in the intensive care unit of the KHMH a team of doctors and nurses from all sectors came together to work God's will and bring the gift of life back to this young mother. Earlier this week this remarkable young woman was moved from the intensive care unit and held her baby for the first time with every hope for a full recovery and a lifetime of giving thanks for the gift of life for her beautiful baby boy and for the her own precious life brought back from the brink through God's grace and the remarkable efforts of our own Belizean health care providers.
