Prime Minister Dean Barrow told Amandala Monday that Juan C. Basombrio, attorney of Dorsey & Whitney LLP in the US, is representing the Government of Belize in a recently filed multi-million-dollar lawsuit lodged last month against the Government by Belizean attorney and former PUP Attorney General, Glenn D. Godfrey, over agreements that the Government, under the People's United Party administration of Said Musa, had with the defunct Godfrey company, Intelco, or International Telecommunications Limited.

Michael Ashcroft, at the time when he ran Belize Telecommunications Limited (now Belize Telemedia Limited, BTL), spoke of the then telecommunications rival as "a pension plan for the boys," said Barrow.

Things didn't work out as planned. Intelco flopped, now here comes Godfrey, said Barrow, suing the Government of Belize for US$10 million.

Godfrey has launched his lawsuit against the Government via GDG Acquisitions LLC, a Florida corporation, which he recently registered, and he is reportedly suing over rental of equipment on lease terms.

Barrow could not explain to us under what terms Godfrey could sue the Government overseas.

Asked about the nature of the claim, Barrow said all he knows is that the dispute is over equipment and contracts.

He notes that Intelco is also suing Belize Telemedia Limited locally, in another recently filed lawsuit.

The contract suit was lodged in the U. S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in Miami on Friday, February 10, 2012.

According to an article published in Offshore Alert, GDG was formed on January 26, 2012, and it acquired rights in the master lease and related telecoms agreement on February 6, 2012, in a web of transactions dating back a decade, involving LGS Services Limited, the forerunner of Intelco.

The presiding judge is William J. Zloch and the referring judge is Robin S. Rosenbaum.
