Is COVID Curve Flattening? - 01/26/21 11:48 AM

Regarding the weekend numbers for COVID-19, there were no deaths reported on both Saturday and Sunday.

There was a total of 710 tests, and only 50 were positive, a positivity rate of just 7%.

That's much lower than in November and December when it was routinely over 20, and 30%, and so, we asked the Health Minister if the infection curve is starting to flatten:

Reporter
"Is there any intentions from the ministry to publish the ages of the Covid casualties, the victims who passed away, because we know that age is a correlation to those who are most susceptible to it?"

Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness
"As you can see we have expanded the information we give on our daily infomercials and we do see that from the different sectors of the public their request for additional information. Part of the difficulty we have at the ministry is what do we give out and what do we keep and so the team at the ministry is looking at it to see what additions or subtractions they are going to be making to the infomercials. The numbers have been decreasing and yes, it is true that in Cayo and in Belize districts we have seen an upsurge in numbers. But for example in the northern districts where we actually implemented an inter-district traveling you have seen the numbers gone down dramatically."

Reporter
"The weekend numbers you had zero deaths reported and then the daily infectivity rates seems to be trending down around 10% or below. Countrywide, is the infection curve starting to flattened?"

Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness
"We are cautiously optimistic. I don't want to say yes as yet. You know that the standard is 5% or at least a period or 2 weeks consecutively for you to be able to say it is flattening and so while we are happy with the direction we see we are going in, we still have to remain very cautions and guarded."

We also asked the Minister about the latest information they have on COVID vaccines that Belize will receive. Here's what he had to say:

Reporter
"Is there any updated timeframe for the arrival of the Covid vaccines for Belize and what type of vaccines will be receiving?"

Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness
"We signed on to the COVAX facility and we are still in discussion with PAHO to determine exactly which vaccine will be coming into the country. They have said to us in the first quarter of this year we are to receive it, but we are still waiting to see exactly which date it will be arriving and which one."

Reporter
"Are you able to say the first amount that we will receive?"

Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness
"We have paid for thirty percent so far, but we are not sure yet if we are going to be receiving the thirty percent in one shipment or over time, this is still being worked out through PAHO."
