Apparently the Yucatan Express which began service from Tampa to Cancun and Merida/Progreso in late November hasn't proved successful. Reportedly the Scotia Prince is cutting back service, eliminating Cancun as a destination and going only once weekly to Progreso near Merida. Whether this will continue through April as planned is as yet unclear.

Anyone heard any additional information?

An earlier attempt at Tampa/Yucatan service several years ago lasted only a few weeks.

Looks like there's just not enough demand on this route.

This is the Scotia Prince's take on the situation.

We will no longer be sailing
into the Port of Morelos. It's not that we haven't had the passenger
capacity but because of operational and navigational factors. The channel
had to be dredged and as of yet it hasn't been done making it very difficult
for the ship to dock. Therefore we are offering our passengers the option
to cancel and get a full refund with a 25% discount on a future booking or
to change the departure port to Progresso near Merida. If you should have
further concerns or questions please do not hesitate to call us or reply to
this email.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
