Good airfare from Newark??

Good airfare from Newark?? - 06/28/04 05:42 PM

Hi all,

Just wondering what would be a good deal to AC from Newark Airport?? I'm planning on a January trip and so far haven't seen anything less than $600..and that's with a connection in Houston with Continental.. Should I hop on it or wait until closer??

What's the quickest, easiest route from NY area?? I'd be willing to schlep over to LGA or JFK if it's worth the time and tolls...

Thanks in advance,
Melody

Have you priced direct flight to Miami and then Miami to Belize City? Cost wise, you may be able to save a little but at least it is more direct then flying to Houston. We found Marcia Travel (1-800-568-3608) best for Belize air fare from Miami. (Haven't used them recently however, so not aware of current prices.)

The quickest and easiest is the non stop on CO on Saturday. Should be equally priced (if not a bit cheaper due to less taxes) as the connections through Houston. USAir has been having some good rates from NYC too. The average from the NYC area is about $500 R/T +/-. Rates are dependent on availability so you can wait for a sale (which will probably come along bewteen now & then)if you are somewhat flexible, but the choice dates may not be available.

I don't advise booking it point to point as Everglades recommends. It is illegal and the airlines have really been cracking down on it. If you spend a night in Miami each way, then it's OK and legal.

Try programming the city pairs into Yahoo Travel or Travelocity and it will notify you every time the rates change. And sign up for the fare notification on USAir's site as well. And check the fares often - they have been changing almost daily these days!

Is there only a nonstop from Newark on Saturdays?? Any other nonstops from New York area to BZE at all??? With kids, the less connections the better...

Thanks again,
Melody

Hi Barbara K, "Illegal", that's interesting. I had no idea. I'm curious, why is making flight arrangements illegal? (Learn something everyday around here)

Hi Barbara, The more I thought about your "illegal" statement the more incredulous it seemed, so I called American Airlines. You obviously know something AA doesn't know because as far as they are concerned there is no reason why these arrangements can't be made by an indiviual and further, it is not necessary to stay overnight in Miami.
I'm sure you are basing your statement on something and I'm still curious what it is. Thanks.

Booking a flight from wherever to Miami and then booking a flight from Miami to Belize, separately, is called booking it point to point, rather than booking it from wherever directly to Belize. If a travel agent does this to save the client $$, and it is caught by the airline, the travel agent will receive a debit memo for the amount of the difference plus a fine. Maybe an individual can do it now (or has less chance of getting caught) or maybe it is just the airlines sticking it to the agents (as usual)...wouldn't surprise me at all! If you feel the need to check up on this, try calling the airline several times. I am sure you will get many different answers. I am just going by my experience as a travel agent for 21 years.

Thanks for the explanation Barbara. However, I wasn't suggesting "point to point" but rather arranging for the ticket the normal way, i.e., either through an agent or the airline itself.
I never heard of point to point before so I learned something. Still, there seems to be something inherently wrong with this "illegal ruling" by the airlines. To your knowledge has it ever been challenged in court? I don't think it would be hard to beat in court.

"Have you priced direct flight to Miami and then Miami to Belize City?" This is booking point to point rather than booking Newark to Belize via Miami (all one transaction). There are a lot of non sensical rules by the airlines. Basically anything that can save you money by "creative" booking is illegal. I guess it would be hard to pick up a customer doing it directly on the internet as 2 separate transactions, but they have really been cracking down on agents for any infractions. Not sure if it has been challenged in any courts.

Airlines can and do set any rules they want to. Just like any business. The courts have nothing, zip, to do with it. An airline can tell you that you have to fly in diapers, always travel through Detroit, and carry a dead chicken at all times if they want to. Nothing illegal about it. You just don't have to fly the airline if you don't want to. I'm exaggerating a little, but basically that's the case -- as long as rules are uniformly enforced and don't violate any law they can be just about anything a business wants.

Re: Good airfare from Newark?? - 06/30/04 03:40 AM

Thanks Barbara and Lan for the edification. I guess what bothered me was the term "illegal" which to me infers a law is being broken. Obviously, no law is being broken. It is only the policy or practice of the Airline that is being ignored if point to point connections were made. This being the case, the only one that could be fined or punished is the travel agent "IF" a travel agent were involved. If an individual made his/her own point to point arrangements who would know/care. By some odd coincidence if an airline became aware of this "terrible" deed would they say, "you saved $30 by doing this, hence you can no longer use our airline"?

Golly, how would I get to Belize? No point to point for me. (Just being a bit facetious.)
Thanks again for the information.

actually, if they catch you, they can 1) deny boarding; 2)charge you an upcharge; 3) send you to Cancun!
