A New Fee for Belizeans to Enter Mexico When Border Reopens

The Airport may be open but Belize's land borders remain closed. It's a reality that has kept Corazalenos and Benquenos from crossing the borders for their habitual hang outs and shopping. And while many been waiting for a return to some type of economic normalcy with the re-opening of those borders, that may never be the case up north.

That's because of a reform vote on Mexico's 2021's Law of Rights taken 10 days ago by the country's Chamber of Deputies where it passed with a comfortable majority. It's a reform that could eliminate Belizean's exemption from paying departure tax for stays of less than 7 days.

It's a move that has Mexican businessmen worried given that an important part of the state's economy turns on Belizean tourism and shopping visits. It's serious and could mean an end to a particular type of tourism and a major change to many Belizean's pre-pandemic way of life.

But, it's not law yet, the reform has now been passed to the Mexican Senate and it must get their approval.

7News reached out to both Belize's Ambassador to Mexico and the Mexican Embassy in Belize for comment. The former refrained from comment for the time being and the latter advised us to reach out to them next week.
