Last months big storm has blown some Keeled Billed Toucans from the mainland to Ambergris Caye.
If you have seen these guys please post here so we can keep up with their success or failing to survive the island life transition from the rainforest.
They seem to be eating sea grapes and palmetto berries.
elbert, what a beautiful toucan.
I so appreciate all the pictures and info., you share with us.
Marty's pics
I ran them through Photo Shop
Thanks
Kate and I have been seeing them around our house at Mexico Rocks.
They look almost out of place.
I had one in my yard briefly about two weeks ago. I was stunned!
Very nice where were the picture taken?
Would be nice if they stick around !!
One of my neighbors just north of the Palapa Bar said there were two in the big tree next to my house.
There was one high up in a tree behind the maintenance shed at Xanadu last week. All of the maintenance personnel seemed to be as amazed as we were. It really was an incredible site!
Sounds like the same one that was in a tree by my house in San Marcos...3 blocks west of Xanadu.
There are 3 that are flying around the Royal Palm, Caribe Island, San Marcos circuit.
I am not a bird expert, but the ones we have seen look quite fit - ie not starving or weak.
I had a bright red finch of some sorts in my yard this weekend that I have certainly not seen before, and a while ago a Lovely Cottinga (sp?) which is a very rare forest bird that is bright blue, and gets serious bird watchers very excited.
A beautiful toucan has taken up residence at Sueno del Mar, 12 miles to the north and looks to be healthy and happy.
From these reports we seem to a quite a few on Ambergris now.
My sea grape tree and palmetos were cleaned out of food pretty quick. I've noticed dry dog food seems to be exciting for them .I put a dish on a pole in my back yard and its fought over.
I am glad to hear they are hanging around Xanadu. I'll be there in 18 days. I've never seen one .. except on a Cereal box.
There is a fruit loop that lives next door to me.
Bill, they are hanging around Xanadu now, before the property value drops in, oh, about 18 days.
I wasn't aware you had decided to stay At Xanadu? To late for me to change my reservation
The toucan came to visit again yesterday. Looking heathly. I just might try hanging some fruit in the trees and see if he sticks around.
We had one in the garden this morning. They are so beautiful.
I'm sure they are Amanda. I hope to see one. I'm a little tired of Mourning Doves and Cardinals..
no not really they are beautiful too.
what exactly is a
furit loop??
lots of fruit loops here on the board!
Furit Loop? Is that a California thing?
Its a breakfast cereal with a Toucan logo. very famous
'California thing' Ha I like that...Bill are you trying to say something about California liberals?
Elber - You are the bird expert so I hesitate to write - but my books show this bird as a KEEL BILLED bird - Not Kill. What do you think?
I can't spell worth a skit
LOL!! No Elbert Just trying to bust Leah-Ann. I am the world's worste speller. So, it's nice to see i'm the only one who can mess up the Typed word

I can't find the "furit loops" on my grocery store shelf! Do they keep them in a special store just for the liberals?? :P
And someone please tell me we aren't talking about "ferret loops"!!
Did someone say it was time to bash Liberals??
we've had one here in the early morning almost every day for the last week/two... perching/eating in a papaya tree...
Did someone say it was time to bash Liberals??
Ry, does your clock ever show any other time? :p :p
Hey now. On behalf of the California fruit loops....
Our first visit to AC is less than 90 days away and one of the "stereotypical" Belizean aspects I hope to see is a live toucan in the wild. Yes, it's probably predicated by the Froot Loops commericials I've seen in my younger years, but I just love toucans! Are they usually on the caye or are they more mainland birds?
SF Jeff , wow I've never seen a California liberal perched in a tree.
seriously though where are you on the island.? I'm thinking after all the fruit is gone these guys are going to be in trouble.
I'm feeding dry dog food to the birds around my house and they are getting demanding and bold in the mornings waiting for me to feed Bubba and throw out a little for them. One of the woodpeckers taps hard on top of my tin roof at 5:30. Woodpeckers......Midwestern Democrats??
SF Jeff , wow I've never seen a California liberal perched in a tree.
How else are we gonna save them????
I'm sure they are Amanda. I hope to see one. I'm a little tired of Mourning Doves and Cardinals..

Hi Bill,
I am in Spartanburg (with the Doves & Cardinals)! Where do you hail from? I knew a Major Mc Ghee (not sure of spelling) whose mother owned the Tip Top Inn at Pawleys Island years ago. They were from Florence... any relation??
Hey Elbert.... Jeff here @ Azul... we have a papaya tree behind the Rojo Lounge building... a toucan has been visiting it pretty much every day in the morning... It was up there again this am around 10:00... We'll probably hang a bit of fruit up in it today and see if we can get the bird to linger a bit longer...
Are the toucans still hanging around? I know this is an old post but I came across it and was curious.
