Read this link! It is outrages how the Belize government is handling this dam project. I would not call this democracy.

Tahnks for keeping us all updated on this. Why it's taking so long to put a stop to this is ridiculous. This is definately a "no brainer". It seems as if the people are finally getting listened to, if only a little at a time.

It's not outrageous...it's typical.
It will be interesting to see WHO in the government and the Belize Judicial system will take a stand and be counted.

When is the next election? LOL

(please take this in the tone it is meant)

if you don't like it, DO SOMETHING.

sitting shaking your head doesn't help.

munichchick & i (among others) signed a petition & keep informed. see my 'fortis & the dam' link i bumped up here.

you can get as involved as you want, but don't cry the blues to me if you do nothing and the dam happens.

Jane I applaud your efforts to "do something". Besides signing a petition, what else do you think "we the people" can do?

Re: Chalillo Dam Project Controversy Update! - 08/21/02 06:09 AM

Yes, I signed the petition too, a while ago. The website, stopfortis.org, has many updates and info, including the address to send a letter of protest to the fortis CEO. Fortis is the Canadian company which wants to build the hydorelectric dam in Belize. Also, you can get involved in such groups in the US as the Natural Resources Defense Council and the World Wildlife Fund, which is also involved in averting the "dam disaster". As a non-citizen, I think that's what we can do. I might add that I really agree with Jane on this. As a community activist in my neighborhood and city, I really try to get involved in issues, write letters, go to meetings, etc. We may not always be able to change the world, but you would amazed at the "ripple effect" one's constructive words, actions, letters and opinions can have.

Thanks Trina. Sounds like a good plan.
However...I'm not in the states.
And....one more time....this is not the states. Unfortunately....things don't work the same way here.

There are groups that will ban together for a cause and that's good, but the bottom line will be either politics or money.

Sad but true.

People banding together for a cause IS politics, or a form OF politics. Sometimes, that's how any great social cause or change gets acccomplished. Not just in the US, but worldwide. Who would ever think that Nelson Mandela, after being in prison for 25+ years, would be freed and become South Africa's president? Nobody probably. But he did it.

The more people that get involved and are "in the know" about this the better. I signed the petition about a year ago and also sent e-mails to alot of people I work with. Any of you constantly e-mailing aroung jokes at work? Try sending the petition address to friends that you think might at least take the time to sign.

enig - that goodness for trina! i am no politico. i have no knowledge or interest at all. but i am a lover of nature, and i just could tell that this dam thing sounds like a bad idea.

my only intention here was to light a fire under you & see if someone else had any better ideas. where is susan???

certainly just talking about things will keep the ideals alive...inform as many people as you can. you never know; someone may know someone with some kind of pull. good luck.

I've signed, lettered, and posted, that's about all I can do.

Hey, at least we did something about it! Every little bit helps. Just making people aware already helps. The attitude some people have "There is nothing "I" can do" will not save anything.

Re: Chalillo Dam Project Controversy Update! - 09/04/02 07:49 PM

While I applaud the "gung Ho" efforts of Munichchick and Jane and many others that are "doing something" for this cause, there are a few things you should remember.

You guys have moderate to great internet connections at limited costs that allow you to sit and post and email all day till your hearts content. It's a hell of a lot easier to communicate from the states.

I personally cannot afford to make BTL any richer by sitting online 24/7.

I know I could exhaust all my time and energy and make this a personal cause, but I doubt seriously if anyone will hear me.
I don't mind talking about it or disagreeing with the proposed damn, but I'm not going to let the issue consume my every waking moment.

Outside world organizations stand a better chance of having an impact on this issue than local Belizeans. Politicians here are not well known for listening to the peoples voice unless it's right before an election.

That is just the way it is...and yea, it sucks! Welcome to the Caribbean!
