Victory or Loss for protected conservation areas?

Victory or Loss for protected conservation areas? - 03/11/09 06:32 PM

I see in today's SP Daily that a Cabinet position was lost and duties of a Ministry reassigned. According to the article it resulted from a "spat" amongst appointees and was over "...the award of a license to establish a restaraunt and tourism trinket shop within a protected conservation area". There's no info where the shop was to be or if the ousted Minister approved or disapproved of the license. It seems to me that if the departed Minister disapproved of the license, "protected" areas just took another hit.

The story was covered at length in San Pedro Daily and other Belize publications. You need to look back at that to understand the implications of this cabinet change.

'spose you could give me a hint on how far back. SP Daily just lists dates for archives.

I don't keep records. It's spread over maybe the last 3 months

Diane Haylock, president of NICH, awarded the concession at Caves Branch to Discovery Tours without putting the bid to tender.
