1st time - Snorkelies

1st time - Snorkelies - 04/11/04 08:06 PM

Since ya all sound so darn friendly, guess that it’s safe to admit that hubby and I have never, ever … gone a snorkeling. Growing up on the coast of ME, never quite had the urge to break through the ice to try it out. Wondering if the info that you gave to Splicer is the same for “newbies” - as in do they have the patience needed?

Ohhh … a snorkeling we will go, a snorkeling we will go, heave ho you’re overboard, a snorkeling we will go.

Relax, breathe, relax...that's all there is too it. Not a bit harder than blowing bubbles in your bath tub.

You had one of those in ME and TN, right? wink

pS: I know what a snorkler is, have to go look up snorker laugh

Re: 1st time - Snorkelies - 04/11/04 08:35 PM

So easy to float in the carribean sea also.

My caretaker while snorkeling is Enrique with AquaDive at the SunBreeze. He stays with me all the time, towing me when I tire, since I am not a strong swimmer, and old.

Note, some snorkeling guides leave you on your own, which is ok for experienced snorkelers, but newbies need care, to enjoy the scenery below.

Re: 1st time - Snorkelies - 04/12/04 01:12 AM

awty...

i know you've seen the pictures of me snorkeling and you probably think i'm experienced...but the first time i ever tried it was last winter in jamaica...and i was hooked! i grew up with a fear of the water and never learned to swim until i was older and never very well. i cannot dive, swim underwater or even jump into the water without holding my nose!

when my "waterbaby" husband suggested snorkeling last vacation, the thought did not appeal to me immediately. the only reason i agreed was that the water was warm and i could wear a vest. i made him take me to the swimming pool with our gear to teach me before i would even go in the sea. it was pretty comical and i was more than a little embarassed to have anyone watching me practice...but i gathered up my nerve and after a few instructions, i waded into the pool, adjusted the mask and snorkel and started to float face down. it took me less than 15 seconds to get the hang of it. i stood up after a minute or so and said..."OK...i can do this...let's go!"

once in the ocean, i was a little less confident, but it only took a few more minutes to start to relax and enjoy myself. it was so amazing to me...like discovering a new world i didn't know existed...it was awesome! i came up smiling and laughing and excited...over and over...and i couldn't get enough of seeing what i was seeing.

if you aren't a strong swimmer, you might want to invest in an inflatable vest. i got one this year and it was wonderful for me...just the extra security made the experience so much more enjoyable. i've also been able to snorkel without a vest for brief periods...i can float really well...but still prefer a vest, especially when the water is choppy or i know i'm going to be out for awhile.

a very good place to practice is at ramon's pier. you can step down into the water from the dock there. the water is clear and inviting and you are in a protected area. a friend of mine tried snorkeling there for her very first time when we were there...it took her several minutes to get into it...but she ended up having the time of her life too!

one more bit of advice...invest in your own snorkel and mask. get one that fits well and feels comfortable...and get a "dry" snorkel. you won't be sorry...and you WILL use it many more times!!

can't wait to hear all about your first time!!

Wear a t-shirt too. It is easy to get sunburned.

Re: 1st time - Snorkelies - 04/12/04 01:22 AM

This year I was a bouyant butt, fancy colored tube and no fins....you're gonna love it smile

I never thought of a vest until I heard of these gals, butt smile I made out real well without one.
Sea water wants you on the top, looking down.

For the most part, you can stand in the water wink

Think of yourself as the momma fish, lookin for those three baby fishies that swam and swam..... laugh

Yellow beans, please smile

Re: 1st time - Snorkelies - 04/12/04 02:59 AM

What wonderful advice - thanks ladies!

Mikell I could just picture your whole "lesson" in the pool and it made me smile. The one thing that I REALLY like about getting older is that I don't mind doing "stuff" that would have embarrassed me when I was in my 20's.

Wouldn't have thought of the t shirt - back to me mamma saying "don't get your clothes wet dear" That was cuz she knew as soon as they get wet, I was in the water! Grew up on the coast and went to camp on the week-ends to get away from the tourist who came to visit along the coast.

And what can I say NYGal .... the lil fishes image was fine and dandy right down to the last part of that song "and they swam and they swam right ovah the dam" ... AGHHHHH!

Re: 1st time - Snorkelies - 04/15/04 03:10 PM

Very few answers to the initial question. My advice is, do it. Get a snorkel and mask, practice in a pool or in shallow water when you get down there. Some dive operations here in the states also give snorkeling lessons. The snorkel trips we have been on in AC always have had a few newbies, and the operators usually handle them with great care. If you are just practicing in shallow water, there are always a bunch of more experienced people willing to help.
No matter what, if you've never done it, do it when you get the chance, it's a whole new world down there. It is not physically challenging, little effort needed other than developing a relatively simple technique.

Re: 1st time - Snorkelies - 04/15/04 04:09 PM

i reccomend that when you arrive on the island take a morning just to practice at the hotel pool or off the dock. It is easy, after your first practice you will be a pro wink
Posted By: wannaBEthere

Re: 1st time - Snorkelies - 04/15/04 10:54 PM

What was the initial question????

Oh yeah ... first timers snorkel-ies

Think I've got it ... sneak off to the pool just 'fore sunrise, and practice, practice, practice.

I'm READY ..... apply some SafeSea and "bring on the real stuff" ... glub glub glub

Thanks guys for hopefully making the first time snorkel-ies do it with snorkel-ease!
