Exploring by golfcart - 01/23/08 06:14 PM

Hey, just wondering if its safe to explore the island by golf cart from North to South. We really didnt get a chance to do a lot of that last year.

As long as the roads are good the South end is a great place to visit. Lot's of wildlife and beautiful views.

There's a dock at the very end that you can swim and snorkel from just keep an eye out for boat traffic (stick close to shore.)

The road north of the Palapa bar are really bad - again!
They are do-able up to that point.

I had a very pleasant surprise while jogging North a couple of days ago. Behind Costa Maya someone has developed a Nature trail to the back. I'm asked questions about 5 times a week by birdwatchers like, 'where do I go to see a Mangrove Warbler?', this Trail through the Mangrove leads to the lagoons in back and is well maintained. Its entrance is accessible by Golf cart but just to the entrance, its a foot path. I saw local orchids and some sensitivity in not clearing berry producing brush that is food for birds, and someone has dug a shallow spot so the birds can access fresh ground water. A very cool thing to do for the Island. Kudos to the Costa Maya Management.
FYI mangrove warblers are found in the Mangrove :-)

We used to explore by golfcart and stop at many places along the way.
Some Resorts clear the sea grass or make artificial reef environments
From Victoria House - great service, drinks, dock -small squid in engine block once
Ramon's always seem to have something near therir dock
Past Amigos Del Mar - used to let people snorkel their dock and Cholos is right there.
Further north we only snorkeled a few docks but same friendly service!
We did the whole beach up & down different places.
Many places didn't mind you snorkeling as long as you were a customer as well - not difficult to stop for cool refreshing beverages as you explore!
Belize it!
