Selling Congrejo Caye - 01/29/08 01:33 PM

Last night's channel Seven News -

*****************

Report: GOB Selling Cangrejo Caye

Regardless of who wins the upcoming general elections, there are gonna be changes – and it seems the awareness of that is the single unifying force that’s pushing some questionable deals to get made. And prominent among those is one we heard of today. 7NEWS has received credible reports from multiple sources which say that government has finalized a deal to sell Cangrejo Caye to a well connected local developer.

The full details are not known – but we do know that Cangrejo Caye, which sits just southwest of San Pedro Town has been the subject of much scrutiny for some time. Island leaders and residents don’t want it sold – but reports to us say that it is on the block; the documents are in the mapping section at the Ministry of Natural Resources and the transaction is expected to be final by the end of the week. Cangrejo Caye is one of the larger islands in that area and is considered to be an important habitat for wildlife.

is there anything we, as non-residents, can do? (or was this intended for residents?)

signing the petition against the chalillo dam years ago didn't accomplish anything...

any suggestions?

This is really a shame. Cangrejo is a great fishery, and tarpon nursery. It's heavily fished by SP guides, and if they(and the resorts that use them) don't object, something is wrong.

Where is it located? SW of town is our territory! Thanks.

The article in the San Pedro Daily states that it is being sold to "a well connected local developer".

Cangrejo Cays is a sizeable caye - about 1.75 miles long, located about 1.5 miles from of AC. It is the first caye of that size south and slightly west of the southern tipof Ambergris Caye. You fly over it when you land in SP.

I just wrote to my favorite guide there and expressed my concern over the inevitable loss of that fishery. Aught'a be a law.

Doesn't money always "talk".

Re: Selling Congrejo Caye - 01/30/08 02:29 AM

Not always. I think there is a growing realization on AC that you can go too far and undermine what you have worked so hard to build.

Re: Selling Congrejo Caye - 01/30/08 02:47 AM

Money does talk so these developers need to be hit where it hurts them the most, their pocketbooks. They need to get the message that they will lose money by developing these properties through significant law suits and publicity that drives their buyers away

Re: Selling Congrejo Caye - 01/30/08 02:48 AM

And who are they? There are theories but once their names are discovered, they need to be plastered with BAD press here and in their home towns.

Being an "outsider" I wonder just "who" is the true owner of this property and if they are the legal owners by virtue of the words in the country's constitution, eminent domain, homestead, squatters rights, etc. Anybody really know?

Just wondering...could this unnamed developer be Bob Dhillon - Main Street Equity Corp.???

Government Denies Sale of Cangrejo Caye

Survey pegs are clearly visible on Cangrejo Caye and credible reports to us on Monday said that the deal to sell it was being wrapped up at the Ministry of Natural Resources. But since the alarm was raised two days ago, government has been scrambling to cover itself on this hot button political issue in San Pedro. And today the Ministry of Natural Resources sent out a release saying that no permission to survey has been granted, and that there is no lease or sale of the caye itself or any lands on the caye. So then, any survey activity is illegal. But more than that, the Ministry’s release says that the presence of the pegs is the sign that a gimmick is in progress. We’ll leave it at that.

Green Reef writes a compelling letter and they are to be commended for taking a stand.

Also kudos to the unnamed individual who blew the cover on this.

The main message of this event is that we need to start thinking beyond tomorrow. There must be a long-term plan (including awareness, education and activism) to be sure that nobody gets to do this again.

Bad Guy #1 is just walking through an open door - if it's not Bad Guy #1, it will be Bad guy #2 or #3 or #10 --- we need to close the door - that is our job.

When Usher called Reef Radio to deny the sale of Cayo Cangrejo, he said they had searched all their records for the last 9 months since Marin has been the Minister and have found no sales, leases, etc. And, he said, they have not issued any permits on “national lands.”
Sounds as if they might “discover” that the sale took place more than 9 months ago during the prior Breceño’s administration. Then we will learn that the more recent permits pertained to private property only.
