Career day - 02/12/08 05:25 PM

I am in the works of planning Career day at the school.

Monday February 25th - time schedule to come

If anyone will be in town that day and would like to talk to the kids please let me know.

We are looking to inspire the middle and older kids with career goals that are attainable here.

I will round up our doctors, lawyers, police officers, pilots, mechanics, firemen, professional skydivers etc. I'll meet with you and figure it out next week.

Thanks reaper

The talks do not have to be too long even 5 min just something comfortable for the person speaking. Props and visuals are welcome if people have them.

We will likely have people rotate between the older grades.

TG -- That's my jump day with reaper if I don't chicken out. Can't see why Mrs. O. and I won't be able swing by if it meets with your needs and timing. A training director and accounting manager do?

Do I dare ask the guy with a screaming skeleton avatar, "What is a professional FCA?" Be easy on me...

That would be great Otter. I will know more on timing after this morning. I am taking Dicks Parents up there.

Pedro2 it is early here and I am still on my first coffee ha ha so yes please elaborate on FCA. I think I would say yes knowing it is you who is asking though.

FCA - Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. A bit like a CPA, but with quite major differences.

The best advice I was ever able to give to Native American Kids I would talk to on Reservations was that a specific career goal is not as important as getting a well rounded education, and that reading and self education on an ongoing basis is vital.

For kids in SP, a further piece of advice I could give would be to become fluent and comfortable speaking English! Many otherwise smart teenagers I've met would be unemployable in many fields, not due to their inability to speak English, but rather their comfort level when communicating in any language other than Creole?

I'll be a little short on time as my flight out of SP is at 2PM, but I could stop by for a while earlier in the morning.
I'm a tradesman specializing in residential remodel/restoration and started out as a tile setter when I changed careers 12 years ago. One key point in a skilled trade such as this is mathematics. The Pythagoreum Theorem is used to verify that a line is straight. I do tile lay out mathematically to help determine the best setting pattern. Mixing dry/wet compounds is ratios. Your'e lucky to be on the metric system. Working with fractions is a pain, as in 5/8 - 7/16 = ? (answer is 3/16).
Let me know if you have an interest. I'll be leaving for SP on the 14th and be at Banana Beach.

That sounds great and well suited for here. I have you on list now.

We are going to get people to talk to standard 2 - standard 6 grates and people can talk for 5 minutes or on a rotating basis and talk to a few classrooms.

Look forward to it. Will need to get it coordinated - not bringing the computer, too much fishing gear.
You can reach me at Banana Beach. Last name's Butler.
