what's up with the caribe island resort? - 11/22/09 08:04 PM

Does anyone know what is going on with Caribe Island Resort? We have reservations there starting Dec. 5. The web site is gone and they don't answer the phone. We were contacted by a gentleman who stated he was going to send us an e-mail so that we could pay off our balance, but he didn't send me anything and I traced his phone number to a mortagage company in Oregon! Are thay out of business? Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

A number of the condo units are up for sale, at what would normally appear to be bargain basement deals for condos on AC. Curiouser and curiouser ...sort of.

Here is what I just found out. I saw an ad on VRBO for a Caribe Island Condo and I contacted the owner. He told me that they are between management companies right now and they don't have a license. He said the old company was stealing from the owners and that I probably won't get my $200 deposit back. I guess I'll see what my Visa card has to say about that. He is still renting a condo there through VRBO, but I am going to look elsewhere obviously! We have never been to Belize and are a little nervous about finding a new place to stay but we already bought the airline tix so......

Don't be nervous susan t. It is indeed unfortunate that you made a wrong pick for your accommodations first time out of the gate, but if you tell us here what you'd really like in accommodations, then we'll be able to help you with your second choice.

And then trust us, you will have a wonderful time and never look back on this bad experience.

Susan,

We stayed at Ramon's Village on one of our visits.
It was excellent, great service, friendly people and everything you need.
I don't know what your budget is?
Here is the web site; http://www.ramons.com/

Good luck and no worries.

Ramon's has great ambiance, but it's too pricey for what you get, IMO.

Considering that susan t had already booked Caribe Island, I don't think she's looking in the Ramon's range. But we can still recommend some great accommodations once we have a better sense of whether or not, they really wanted to be far from town, if they really wanted a restaurant on site, or if they could deal with no restaurant on site, because there are so many great places to go on the island! Shall we assume that they want a pool, because there's a pool at Caribe Island? Shall we assume that they want a kitchenette because that is what the units at Caribe Island offer? etc. etc.

Susan T--if you let the board know what amenities you would like, folks here can help you find a nice place.

I don't want to cause any trouble, but the owner admitted not having a license but is still renting the unit? I hope he/she has worked out something with the BTB. The BTB does look at VRBO and makes sure everyone on there is licensed.

Susan, try Sunset Beach. Its right next door to Caribe Island.

Thank you for the suggestion of Ramon's Village. I will check it out. We are looking for a place with a bed, a mini-fridge, and a coffee maker. Also free bikes. A restaurant would be nice but not necessary. We're really looking forward to trying out different restaurants in San Pedro. I would like to be within 2 miles or less from San Pedro, but not right in town. We are still really looking forward to a week of relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, and exploring the island. Thanks again.

Bikes aside, Banana Beach fits the bill perfectly for you, Susan - every single criteria you listed - amenities and locale.

Oh, and a great,(IMNSHO) staff who will take care of your every want & need . Fantastic brekkie options for two built into the room rates, which more than offsets any bike rental cost. Onsite travel shop who bends over backwards to help you. Great beach to sun yourself and right next door toone of the island's best swim spots. Two pools. Have not checked lately but I'm pretty darned sure the rates are equal to or better than most the other props listed. Easy walk up the beach to town with many options to stop & libate! ( No, I have no financial interest in BB, just my long-time experience)

Oh, should I also mention that for first timers, I'd recommend the oceanfront, 3rd floor?

Wow, thank you for all the sugggestions. Several places that we checked only had the most expensive rooms available on such short notice. We did manage to get a room at Mata Rocks and they gave us 10% off when they heard our sad story. Free bikes, free breakfast and an ocean view! Plus it looks like we're going to get our deposit back on Caaribe Island. I am really looking forward to exploring Ambergris Caye. Thanks again.

Just got back from our first trip to Belize in September..stayed at Costa Maya Reef after we lost our reservation at Legacy. Costa Maya Reef really took care of us...Rodrigo and Shannon are the best..Costa Maya is quiet, yet you can take the water taxi to San Pedro for fun...great snorkeling...took a fishing trip with Tony and Rony and bbq lobster, fish on the beach...just a wonderful fishing trip...Costa Maya has a pool, kayaks and restaurant on site. You can also rent snorkeling equipment. Fun place..we loved it!
