We've all heard about Mel Spain the politician and community activist on that island, but tonight we know about Mel Spain, the Island Verson of Annie Oakley.

Spain used deadly force with precision on Sunday morning when her son told her that her boat "How Yu Like Me Now" was being stolen. She went to the San Pablo area and saw them towing her boat away. She shot out the engine of the lead boat with her licensed 38 revolver. The 3 boat thieves took to the water, and they have all been detained by police.

Well done Mel, it's about time these criminals got caught; the number of boat thefts on this Island was getting out of control.
Perhaps the thieves will think twice before coming to Ambergris Caye to steal. I am glad that Mel took a stand against them. These people think it is OK to take what they want, with little chance of getting caught.
Citizens stand and fight back against crime.

Police detain 3 men in boat theft in San Pedro
Three men are in police custody in San Pedro as prime suspect into a boat thief on Ambergris Caye. The incident took place on Sunday morning as the trio stole the boat of a business woman. Jorge Aldana has the details in the following report.

Jorge Aldana - San Pedro Correspondent
Police has detained three persons of interest as part of a theft investigation of a vessel belongs to businesswoman Merlene "Mel" Spain. According to Police, the men are 20 year old Delnel Brown a Belizean unemployed of San Mateo Area, 27 year old Wayne Allen a Belizean self employed of a DFC Area of San Pedro Town and 31 year old Fernado Mayen, a Belizean Fisherman of a Conch Shell Bay Area in Belize City.
According to Police, investigation so far suggests that the trio were involved in the thief of a 25 horsepower engine and 16 feet skiff, namely "How Yu Like Me Now." Sometime around 3:30 on Sunday morning, police responded to reports of shots being fired and a report of thief in progress. Upon arrival in the Zaak Bajo Area in the San Juan Subdivision of San Pedro Town, they saw two boats floating in the water, one with a gunshot to the engine.
Spain told police that she was awaken by her son who informed her that someone was attempting to steal their vessel from off their dock located on the lagoon. Spain went on to tell police that she proceeded to pull out her license .38 special revolvers and fired a single shot which caught the engine of the fleeing vessel. The men then jumped out of the boat and made good their escape.
Further police investigation revealed that the get-away vessel namely "Final Destination" was registered in the name of Wayne Allen. Police later detained Allen and the two other people believe to be part of the trio that was on the boat at the time of the incident. Final Destination remains impounded at the San Pedro Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to Police, the incident on Sunday is just one of many boats that have been stolen but are later recovered without the engine. Boat owners are advice to be more cautious in protecting their vessels.

Am I the only one who is scared shitless by someone, anyone, firing a gun across the lagoon in the dead (pun intended) of night?

Why are you scared ? More people need to face the low life bastards and SHOW them, enough is enough.

way to go Mel!!! How about a 50 calb. from your roof top !

I'm with you Hon, but still hard to argue with the results. Maybe she was shooting to scare, shooting to wound, shooting to do worse . . .but she was fabulously successful in shooting their engine. In that regard, perhaps I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, and say she's been at the range every day, and she hit what she was aiming at and no one was ever in any danger otherwise.

I love Mel. She's great. And now I know she's got a gun, so I'll be even nicer to her. hee hee

WAY TO GO MISS MEL!

I am with Hon, why I spent 22 years in the British Army so I know about guns. While we lived in San Pedro we owned a restaurant and in one week we had 3 shooting nearby. That week I went and got a gun permit and gun.

What scared the shit out of me, they were done by drunk off duty cops, I would call them policemen but that would be an insult to the rest.

If you hit what you are aiming for fine but I would not like to behind your target if you miss.

Ernie, I love you.

I am afraid of guns sitting on a counter much less a gun in the hand of someone who may fire it. It just seems so out of control that someone who had nothing to do with the crime at hand (or maybe even if they were complicit...it's low life bastards committing a friggin' robbery, not an attempted murder!) may be wounded or shot dead in the wee hours of the morning because of some kind of vigilante justice.

I'm Canadian. Cut me some slack.

I love you too, Hon, but...... if someone is trying to break into my home or trying to steal something that I worked for, or harm one of my family, I will drop his sorry ass in a New York second. I emerged from my mothers womb with a weapon, Thief beware !

"I emerged from my mothers womb with a weapon" ahahahahaa Shouldn't this be in another thread, Ernie? hee hee

Yeah, I'm Canadian like Hon, and don't believe someone deserves a bullet for theft, nor some innocent to get hurt over such. It's a rock and a hard place. Again, I'm really glad about the way the matter turned out. Still, feel fear that it could have gone some other way.

Please do not generalize about Canadians.........I am one that is all for gun ownership/not control and definitely understand that the majority of Canadians are actually indifferent to the issue. I would like to congratulate "Mel Spain " for taking action in the matter. However I doubt that she was aiming for the motor.
