The San Pedro Police has detained three persons of interest as part of an investigation in the attempted theft of a vessel belonging to businesswoman Merlene "Mel" Spain. According to Police, the men are 20 year old Delnel Brown, a Belizean unemployed of San Mateo Area, 27 year old Wayne Allen a Belizean self employed of a DFC Area, and 31 year old Fernado Mayen, a Belizean Fisherman of Conch Shell Bay Area in Belize City.
Police investigation suggests that the trio were involved in the theft of a 25hp engine and 16' skiff, namely "How Yu Like Me Now." Sometime around 3:30 on Sunday morning, police responded to reports of shots being fired and a report of theft in progress. Upon arrival in the Zaak Bajo Area in the San Juan Subdivision of San Pedro Town, they saw two boats floating in the water, one with a gunshot to the engine.
Spain reported to police that she was awakened by her son, who informed her that someone was attempting to steal their vessel from the dock located on the lagoon. Spain proceeded to pull out her licensed .38 special revolver and fired a single shot which caught the engine of the fleeing vessel. The men then jumped out of the boat and made good their escape.
Further police investigation revealed that the get-away vessel namely "Final Destination" was registered to one Wayne Allen. Police later detained Allen and the two other individuals believed to be part of the trio that was on the boat at the time of the incident. Final Destination remains impounded at the San Pedro Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation.
