Thanks for everyone's help with my grocery question last week. I have one more thing to ask:
I know we can take bikes to and from Cocotal into San Pedro during daylight hours, but I'm guessing that isn't the best idea in the dark. How late does the water taxi run? Is it safe to walk back if need be?
We plan to stay late-ish in San Pedro on Thurs and Sat night.
Coastal xpress runs to 10:30pm - It is not recommended to ride bikes at night more so because of the condition of the road. At night it is difficult to see pot holes and such if you are unfamiliar with the road North, but many bikes do travel the road at night. It is strongly recommended that you take a good flashlight. The road up to Journeys end is fairly safe - common sense prevailing.
Taxi's are available always and easy to find in town and the bridge booth closes at 9pm so you won't have to pay the bridge fee.
Also, if you start walking toward the bridge you can usually hitch a ride on a golf cart heading North. Most will let you jump on if there is room.
The toll-booth closes at night but the bridge remains open allowing for a free crossing. Flashlights are definitely recommended if riding or walking up north after dark.
correct, the toll booth closes at 9 so don't let the taxi driver charge you the 12.00bz bridge toll. He does not have to pay it after 9pm. Ernesto the FD manager at Cocotal is very helpful and can give you an idea of what the taxi's charge to his property.
So when you say "taxi," do you mean a car, or are there golf cart taxis?
Get one of those dorky head-band lights - you can ride a bike and find potholes hands-free. They are cool even if they don't look cool.
Enjoy the trip!
most taxi's here are minivans. there are no golf cart taxis on AC. Caye Caulker has the golf cart taxis.
Got it- Any idea what the fare might be to Cocotal, which I think is about 2 1/2 mi north of San Pedro?
Check with Ernesto the FD manager at Cocotal, he will know
