Do not, I repeat do NOT run the mosquito gauntlet. - 10/05/15 02:10 PM
FYI, yesterday, while coming back from Grand Belize, I decided to take the "old road" behind Indigo... I wanted to pick up a few groceries at Mata Grande Grocery, did not want to have to double back and thought "Well, there will probably still be some standing water, but surely I'll be able to make it through." I was correct on both accounts. What I did not factor in was the approx 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 mosquitos that would besiege me in the course of 15 seconds...
Driving along... fine...
Driving along... fine...
"Hmmm, I think I am getting bit?"
My legs have approx 20,000 mosquitos on them.
I frantically swat and flail and FLOOR IT, cajoling all the giddy up that a ClubCar CarryAll is capable of.
I SPEED PAST the store until most of the little F$#@ have given up chase, then jump out while rolling to a stop to swat the remainder of the super persistent once.
I then get back in my cart, itching like mad and double back to the store... same as if I had gone that way in the first place. Sigh...
DO NOT GO THROUGH THERE!!! Wait until perhaps next March, when the Easter winds are here.

Hope you did not give those poor mossies malaria or dengue.

Geezus I'm surprised a husk even remains...
Lets see the average human has between 4.7 and 5 liters of blood and the average mosquito bite draws between 0.001 and 0.01 milliliters. The island's mozzies are miniature vampires in bug form so let's go with 0.01 milliliters, or 0.00001 liters/bite...If all sextillion of those bastids had a simple "draft" on your shout Jeff, you'd have footed the bill for about a slide rules worth of liters...Thank goodness only 20,000 of them bellied up...of course by my calculations they probably only swilled about 20ml of your essence...not even a mouthful of Belikin...but I'd recommend some serious Benadryl doses over the next few days..those mofos have GOT to be itchy!

I made the same mistake as Jeff did yesterday. I was screaming, swatting and in major meltdown. That is a big deal coming from me because I am not a mossie attractor, and thankfully do not have a reaction to mosquito bites.
These insects cluster around you and follow as long as they can ..... It is worth of a Hitchcock film.
The new road is fine, and the side road coming back from the corner to the inner Mata road is also not bad.
This is so crazy, as until the big rain you couldn't find a bug back there if you spent all day looking.

If your talking about when the road heads west, through the canopy...I have got bit so bad from the knees down, I couldn't peddle fast enough! Calfs swelled up terrible.

This trip my shorts stay in the drawer.. I am wearing a long sleeve shirt that is too heavy during the day but it is my only protection. No pool this trip. WOW

Too funny, we almost made that mistake, some guy burning trash said "oh go ahead" we drive through one enormous puddle and we turned around and got the heck out of that spot. Easy going around to Mata Grande!! Nice little store.

I remember being over on the backside a month or two after Keith IIRC. Couldn't get out fast enough, they were in our ears and up our nose. Didn't dare open our mouths to scream. I couldn't figure out how people could live over there.
