Another Customs at Airport Question

Another Customs at Airport Question - 06/12/16 12:57 PM

My thanks to all those who replied to the previous Customs thread. We are moving to AC next month and I've been searching Customs sites to understand what we need to declare upon arrival at the airport. The goods we shipped were easier to understand.

I know my new sheets and shower curtain need to be declared. I purchased them on a "flash sale" website and got super deals. I think I can find most of the receipts --if needed. Plus I'd prefer to shower and sleep on sheets our first night there rather than going shopping for them after a long day of travel! However, my "used" clothing, toiletries, pet toys & blankets, are those subject to duty? What about our computers? They are not new, but I understand electronics are heavily taxed. The sites say personal goods, but I'm assuming they mean new? I'd have no clue how to assess the current value of items we've had a while.

When we vacationed in Belize, we've always buzzed right through customs. This time we're a family coming in with pets and a lot of suitcases and we want to make sure we do this right!

Thanks for your feedback and insights. We greatly appreciated it.

When you are "traveling" you are allowed to bring in things you would normally carry with you on a trip.
Quantity of goods seems to be an element of judgement on who/when duties are assessed. For instance one suitcase of clothes is pretty normal for a person coming for vacation or returning from one, but 5 is not (remember that the sale of used clothing is a big business here).

If you are using a customs broker to clear your other goods, ask him or her about the things you are carrying.

Take everything out of the new box's or packing and mix the new with the old. If they see new items in packing they can and may charge duty on them. If you bring one laptop each that if fine it is when you bring 2/3/4/5 of the same items they want to know why and they will believe you are going to sell them. I hope this helps.

Most everyone travels with a computer plus, don't worry about that item.

Unless it's changed there's no duty on computers anyway (and musical instruments).

I'll make this short.

A Mexican crossed the US border everyday with a wheelbarrow full of hay and oats for feeding horses across the border. The inspectors stopped him once a week and checked the hay and oats for contraband. This went on for years. One of the inspectors was retiring and, on his last day, begged the guy to tell him what he had been smuggling all these years.. He promised to keep the secret... Wheelbarrows.
