As Secret Beach on the north-west coast of Ambergris Caye continues to develop into a popular destination for tourists and Belizeans alike, concerns for the surrounding natural environment have prompted local authorities to set measures to make businesses more environmentally friendly. The San Pedro Sun has confirmed that every business establishment at Secret Beach is now required to build an aerated septic system, or The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) will not renew their liquor license. (SPTC).

Mayor Daniel Guerrero confirmed this new regulation and told The San Pedro Sun that there would be no exceptions to the new rule. He explained that this measure is imperative given the fact that the area is within a distance from the Hol Chan Marine Reserve extended zone and that the proper treatment of sewage and other waste matter is essential for the conservation of the local environment. Secret Beach is known as a relatively pristine area, surrounded by fauna and wildlife native to the island. The waters at its shores lead to the flats off the western coast of the island and into the marine reserve. Thus, it is important to have a proper method of waste and sewage disposal.

this is both important and interesting - the aerobic systems require electricity on a continuous basis and all the power out there is self-generated.

As more homes are built out that way, there will eventually have to be electric expanded. In the meantime, can these systems run on solar? Keep us updated.

This kid of septic system is already mandated for multi-unit projects on the eastern shore. The systems work well if properly tended to. Solar can probably be used to power them up. There is virtually no perk at all in the Secret Beach and GBE area - it's pretty much rock either at, or very near the surface of the properties. The aerobic systems are really needed.
