Milpa Rice a Success in Toledo - 09/09/14 11:29 AM

Results of a field demonstration plot to test increased productivity of milpa rice were a success in the Toledo District.

Paul Mahung: The Milpa Rice field demonstration plot was designed by Toledo District Agriculture coordinator Flint Wagner.

“Milpa production has historically produced projection was 1200 pounds. We have seen that this is very unsustainable for farms so we wanted to improve on the yield of the milpa producers. Mr. Denis Usher was very instrumental in making available his farm to conduct this experiment to include conducting timely agronomic practices and application of fertilizer to the crop.”

“Wagner was pleased with the improved results of the Milpa Rice field demonstration plot.”

“With the application of timely agronomic practices, the application of fertilizer and reducing the planting distance we were able to improve the production of rice from 1200 lbs. to 5,600 lbs. per acre. We also would like to conduct this experiment with other milpa farmers at least three more milpa farmers. We want to incorporate the residues of the soil, test the slash and burn system of production and test humus as an alternative form of fertilizer.”

“Wagner was grateful that Denis Usher not only made a part of his farm in Emery grove village available for the demonstration plot but was also receptive in applying the technical advice given to him by the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural resources in the successful development of the milpa rice field demonstration plot. The work during the entire milpa rice production and field demonstration plot process lasted from May to September 2014.”
