The girls of St John’s College Junior College won the National Volleyball Tournament hosted by the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize ATLIB and the San Pedro High School in San Pedro Town Ambergris Caye last Saturday, February 5.
With five teams in the girls’ competition, each played two games and whoever won most games or the most sets won the tournament. The tournament ended with the girls of St John’s Junior College and Ecumenical Junior College both tied with two victories each. Each team had also won four sets, but the tie was broken by considering the points for and against ratio, in which Ecumenical had 100 pts for and 50pts against; a 2.0 ratio, while the St John’s girls had 100 pts for and only 35 against: a 2.84 ratio.
With the championship decided, the St John’s and Ecumenical girls played a friendly match. Kristal Jones, Keslyn Lizama, Kelsey Balderamos and Shantell Arnold led the St John’s attacks while Diana Carillo and Vivianni Avila received and set the ball for spike attacks. Lila Estephan also rotated into the game to set the ball at the net for Tisha Solis, who added her spike attacks at the net as the St John’s girls dominated the first set 25-21.
The Sabal sisters, Aritha and Jacqueline, and Rushawn Mayen and Rebecca Rath led the Ecumenical girls attacks to get in points of their own, on plays set by Veronica Arzu and Janae Francisco, but the St John’s girls blocking by Jones, Arnold and Balderamos proved the deciding factor as the St John’s girls took the second set 25-23.
