Another Low Pressure System Threatens Belize

As residents in the Old Capital reel over the weekend's epic floods, there is yet another low-pressure weather system that lurks just off the coast of Belize and that is expected to make landfall overnight. Today, News Five headed to the National Met Service near the P.G.I.A. and spoke with Meteorologist Ronald Gordon to get an update on what the country should expect from current weather forecasts.

Ronald Gordon, Meteorologist

"There was an area of low pressure that crossed the country over the weekend. It produced a lot o rainfall especially over the northern parts of the country. This system was being monitored by the end of last week for a low chance of development. We expected some rainfall and our predictions were for a very wet weekend. The amount of rainfall that occurred was not expected. There is what you call extreme events and this is one of those events. The system currently has moved over southeast Mexico. It was expected to emerge over water, but that did not occur so it did not develop. Currently we are looking at another system which is now to the east of Belize and again has a very low probability of development because of its proximity to land and also because of the conditions in the upper atmosphere."

Duane Moody

"What does that mean for Belizeans?"

Ronald Gordon

"What they should expect that it will continue moist, it will continue cloudy and you can expect some more showers, thunderstorms, periods of light rain especially up north and also central areas including Belize City. Our model guidance generally don't detect extreme rainfall like twenty-three inches of rainfall especially for a system which is not a hurricane. So currently for this low pressure system we are looking at three to four inches of rainfall; that is a model guidance. We cannot say for sure that we are not going to have more rainfall than that."

Duane Moody

"When is it expected to reach land?"

Ronald Gordon

"Indications are that it will cross the country overnight and then by tomorrow we should start seeing a decrease in activity. Wednesday should be a transition day between wet and dry and for the most part Thursday should be back to fair weather."

From Belmopan...

Most of that original active rain area has now broken up, most of its present rain is out at sea. There have been a couple of small swell-ups near Belize but little rain from them. Things are calming down now, there is still some rain around, but not much.

I expect today will be mainly overcast, but you should be able to see the sun, the odd shower of rain anywhere.

Temperatures in Belmopan:
Today is probably going to be Similar, to yesterday : Mon, max 28°C 82°F Last night min 24°C 75°F ( Coast usually cooler, hills even cooler )

A band of rain is developing from Orange Walk to Belize City and down the coast, as the Caribbean winds start to come in from the east. Right now this is giving some heavy rain to Belize City again, but it is moving inland.

From Diane on Ambergris Caye

The rains seem to have gone for now. The clearing began this morning. Breezes are gentle and everything is very soggy.

There is standing water in some areas on Ambergris Caye as photos below illustrate. Reports on rainfall vary by area, but we seem to have had over a foot in this neighborhood. The water taxis from the mainland ceased operations for a day, airlines were having a challenging time.

Belize City flooded worst of all. Some areas chest high in water, others not flooded at all. Waters are draining off fairly quickly now. Lots of property loss, but no loss of life. Schools were closed yesterday. Most re-opened today. I understand that a transformer was blown in the Tres Cocos area during the Sunday night electrical storm. Some trees and larger ornamental plants tipped over due to hyper saturated ground. Buildings that "never leak", leaked.

The Mexican state of Quintana Roo declared at state of emergency on Sunday. Guatemala lost a bridge or two. I understand that northern Honduras and Nicaragua were also affected and there my have been loss of life there. Rivers in the Cayo District are rising to flood stage now but most residents are capable of working with those circumstances.

We have General Elections in about two weeks and this emergency could be quite an opportunity for some political grandstanding ..... but to the credit of our good people there is little or none of that going on.

On a somewhat lighter note, a 9-foot saltwater crocodile took refuge from the storm inside the grounds of a hospital in Belize City. A group of wild and crazy guys tried to net it ( failed) and eventually roped it(successfully). They duct-taped his jaws shut and handed him over to officials who thence transported it to a crocodile education center. Note to self: Never, ever run out of duct tape!

Very heavy rains in Belize City. More flooding. More misery for those without sturdy shelter. No income for street vendors and others who make a living on the streets.
