The Caribbean Sea

An upper level ridge extends from the northern sections of Colombia, into the SW corner of the Caribbean Sea, to the northern half of Costa Rica. Upper level SW wind flow moves from the eastern Pacific Ocean, across Central America from Nicaragua northward, into the NW corner of the Caribbean Sea and toward Hispaniola. Scattered to broken clouds are moving across the open waters of the Caribbean Sea, with the upper level wind flow.

High pressure in the central Atlantic Ocean will maintain fresh to strong trade winds in the south central Caribbean Sea, and moderate to fresh winds in most of the remainder of the basin, through Sunday. Smoke, from agricultural fires in northern Central America, may cause haze and reduced visibilities in the Gulf of Honduras and near the Yucatan Peninsula.

On Ambergris Caye this morning the island is feeling a relief from a much needed rain that fell last night. The sky is cloudy and more free water from the sky is expected. The sea around our barrier reef is calm. We have a predicted high temperature for the day set at 84 f.

beautiful photo....

There is a lot of turmoil over central Mexico for the last few days and now over the Yucatan, and there has been another area of high level clouds clashing with easterly Caribbean winds, causing rain mainly off shore near PG. This morning there appears to be some minor clashing just of shore central Belize. But no indication or trace of what caused heavy rain around midnight and again around 5am this morning over Belmopan, where I measured 25mm ( 1" ) of rain. . I don't know how widespread that over night rain was, no indications on any satellite picture.

With so much disturbed air, hard to see what today might bring, high level cloud, sunshine, possibly more rain.

The clashing and swellups out over the Caribbean off the Yucatan, have been moving in towards and now over much of Belize, so I am expecting significant rain is a number of places right now or soon. Rain on Ambergris Caye 7 miles north. Power on and off, on and then really off.

Rain started in Benque around 4.30, Fair amount of water for an hour, was still drizzling at 8 pm.

Technically the rainy season has not started, for that, we need -
The definition of the rainy season is :
" Over 31mm ( 1") Rain in a Week, and 6 of the 9 days are rain days, > 1mm. "

So we need to wait for 9 days to know.

There has been a lot of activity all over central and southern Mexico, and Guatamala and Honduras, so it is no surprise that Belize has now been caught up in that. . But it could all go dry again, for the rest of May.
But none of that is an indication of a wet season or a dry season or an over active hurricane season.
Although there are some out there that would like you to believe that. . . I think the hurricane people have been saying an over active hurricane season now for the last 10 or more years, and yet we have not even been seeing even average numbers for some years.. It is all very random.
