National News: PUC approves a 6.24% increase in electricity rates
As of Sunday, July 1st, Belizeans can expect an increase in their electricity bills as the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) granted Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) a 6.24 % average increase in the Mean Electricity Rate. This represents .39 cents increase per kilowatt-hour through June 2020. This is the PUC's final decision in respect of the 2018 Annual Full Tariff Review Proceedings (TRP) for which BEL made submissions in April. The electricity company had asked for an average rate of 39.25 cents over the two year period, but in May, the Commission only approved an average rate of 38.62 cents. BEL objected and an independent expert, Ian McMillan was appointed to review the initial decision and make recommendations for the determination of regulated values, tariffs, fees and charges that were included in the PUC's final decision.

Wolfe's Woofers: Just One of the Guys
When Andrew and I walked into the noisy, crowded Belize City bar things got very quiet. The Happy Hour partiers stopped drinking and stared at him. "What's wrong with these people?" he asked me. "Haven't they ever seen a vicar?" Andrew is a vicar of the Presbyterian Church back in the U.S. He never goes anywhere without wearing his clerical collar. "They probably think you're a priest," I told him. "They'll get used to it." Sure enough, as we talked the crowd went back to partying and drinking. Every once in a while, the lights would flicker out and then the crowd would cheer loudly. When a waiter came over Andrew asked, "Hey, where is the bathroom?"

HELP GLENN IN BELIZE TO STAY ALIVE! Fundraiser for Glenn Tillett
Glenn Tillett is one of the preeminent contributors to the political, social, cultural and economic discourse in Belize. His contributions to Belize society are many, varied and impactful. In short, Glenn is a national treasure. Unfortunately, Glenn has contracted kidney disease and as a result, has to undertake dialysis sessions three times a week to stay alive. The cost of the dialysis sessions is unfortunately prohibitive and oppressive. From the words of Glenn Tillett: "Currently, as I have been told by several persons who claim authority, there are 32 persons receiving dialysis services from the WORTH implemented program at KHMH in Belize City and La Loma Luz in San Ignacio. Reportedly they pay $25.00 per session. The rest of us pay upwards of $220 per session at the private providers. For nearly all of us this is unaffordable.

English-Speaking Belize: The Easiest Country on the Caribbean
Belize is a country that not many people know much about. It is a young state, only independent since 1981, before which it was British Honduras. The British have had a huge influence on this small Caribbean nation, to the point where the Queen is still on the paper money. It is the only country in the region with English as the official language, and this among many other reasons makes it a comfortable and easy place to visit-or live! Belize is just south of Quintana Roo; the Yucatn peninsula so popular with visitors to Mexico, as it contains Cancn, Tulum, and Playa Del Carmen. But despite its closeness to Mexico, Belize is a very different country. Belize has 240 miles of coastline and countless "cayes," or islands, in the Caribbean Sea off its coast. The country is about the size of New Jersey, with the lowest population density in Central America, which leads to jaw-dropping drives through unspoiled country. You will see sweeping vistas of the Mayan mountains, jungles, and little villages that look like they have been there for centuries.
