The story behind the phrase 'Tza-ten-a-ha'
According to a number of elders of the community, the phrase "Tza-ten-a-ha" was used by the Maya people that came to their shores when the village was first repopulated in 1846. The area had new settlers but it was still visited by the Maya people of the peninsula. These visitors were native to Belize and probably to the ancient city that is now Sarteneja. 'Tza-ten-a-ha' was the phrase used by the Maya when they asked for water...

Terror Outside Cayo Nightclub, Two Dead, Three Injured
Public terror struck in the heart of San Ignacio on Saturday night when shots rang out outside a crowded nightclub. When the dust settled, two were dead and three injured. As we found out today, this burst of unthinkable violence ended in a flash, but has left a deep imprint of grief and trauma which will endure for some time. This was the scene on Saturday night when a Taxi parked in front of CK nightclub was targeted by a gunman. Its passengers 19-year-old, Marquees Robateau, 29-year old Telesha Mckay, and 29-Year-old Windell Trapp had been waiting to get into the overcrowded club. But within seconds Trapp, as well as the taxi man 22-year-old Samuel Hill, were dead - a shocking turn of events that left Marquees Robateau running for his life. A relative spoke to us by phone and asked to remain anonymous:

Police Constable Injured Outside Club
The Commissioner is also wishing peace for the Jimenez family. As we've shown you, he paid a visit to the Police corporal on Sunday, and this morning he said, that, like Mark Twain, the reports of his "death were greatly exaggerated:" "Contrary to what the media was reporting, I believe that some media houses killed the man about a million times but Mr. Jimnez did get a gunshot injury to the mouth and exited the back of the head. Thankfully the bullet did not catch any major organ and so from my discussion yesterday with the attending physician he is expected to have a full recovery. He should undergo surgery to reconstruct the jaw because the entire jaw is broken."

COMPOL Wants to Close CK
One person who's not in good spirits is the owner of the CK's nightclub. The Commissioner is threatening to take away his club license and perhaps his livelihood all because of a crime that took place across the street from the club. Williams explained his rationale earlier today. "We are concerned about this CK or whatever the club name is. I was in San Ignacio yesterday. I went by to get an appreciation as to what the area looks like as well as the establishment and from my observation, the establishment is a very small building per se. From what I can discern from it is that it is not a place that is suited to be a night club and what we gather is that."

Two Days Out Of Jail, Eggy Got Killed
We turn now to the weekend's other murder, which occurred on Marage Road in Ladyville. Over the years, this street has become a sort of deadly battleground between two warring gang groups that have established themselves in the 'La Milpa' and 'Japan' areas of the village. And this time, the target was one of the veteran combatants on this battlespace.22-year-old Egbert Baldwin was acquitted last week of a major shoot-out in May 2016, in which 3 men from one crew were injured. 23-year-old Lionel Rhamdas was also murdered in that shoot-out.

Drug Plane Swung Low Over The North On Sunday
And while police have to focus resources on solving those murders - they also have to keep eyes in the skies for those drug planes coming in from South America. Residents of Xunox village saw one circling yesterday afternoon. The COMPOL confirmed it today:"This is nothing new, and so, from yesterday evening up to this morning around five, we were monitoring tracks and the first track that came flew over and we later received information that it landed in Guatemala and the second track that came, again, we got information that that went to Mexico..."

Deceased Major's Mom Calls Out Security Minister For False Claim
School is starting in three weeks - and it is an especially difficult time for the family of deceased BDF Pilot Radford Baizar. His three children and one on the way, lost their breadwinner when he crashed and died on February 26 in an air tragedy that claimed four lives. There seemed to be some consolation last week when the Minister of National security announced that all the families had gotten an ex gratis payment of one hundred thousand dollars.

Cops Caught Contraband In Santa Familia
Border jumpers are driving up the COVID case numbers, but contraband smuggling is also a high risk activity threatening to bring COVID into Belize along with all those cheap beers and sodas. Despite the warnings and the increased border security, contraband continues to stream across illegal border crossings with Mexico and Guatemala. And, on Friday evening, Cayo police found 68 cases of contraband beer stashed at a Santa Familia residence.

Morning Home Invasion In Maya Mopan
And while even closed borders haven't been able to stop border hopping outlaws, the regular outlaws are also wreaking havoc with robberies. A string of crimes on the outskirts of Belmopan culminated in a brazen home invasion on Saturday morning. We got the details from Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvette at this morning's police press briefing:

Cops Found a Small Armory of Explosives
But while Belmopan criminals are becoming more and more desperate, criminal elements in Teakettle seem to be preparing for war. On Saturday while conducting joint operations on Young Gial road Police and CIB discovered a poor-man's armory hidden in an empty lot across the street from a convicted drug dealer. ACP Myvette gave us a rundown of the stockpile earlier today. "Also on Saturday Roaring Creek police officers including all the different agencies conducted an operation on Young Gyal Road in Teakettle village which led them to the discovery of three 223 weapons magazine, one 223 round of ammunition, one riot smoke grenade, and one anti-riot irritant grenade, no one was found in the area so these items were connected and deposited as found property whilst the investigation continues."

Robber Caught On Camera And Then Caught By Cops
Police have tracked down a robber who was caught on camera holding up a delivery truck last week. It happened last week Tuesday afternoon in Santa Elena Town where a single gun man held up a Madisco delivery van, and stole the cash bag. It was all caught on camera, and this weekend, Police tracked down the alleged robber right in Santa Elena.

NTUCB Issues Sweeping Statements Lashing Out At UB, Ministry
Tonight, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize is calling for fair and equitable treatment on behalf of the newly certified University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union, and the Christian Workers Union.Exactly a week ago, the UBFSU received its full certification to act as the bargaining agent for 237 employees at the national university.Initial indications to our newsroom are that the tension between the two sides has been cooling off because the administration has made recent attempts at consulting them as valued stakeholders.

Labour Minister Rejects NTUCB's Release
Earlier in the news, we told you how the National Trade Union Congress of Belize was criticizing the Ministry of Labour for it's supposed silence on the dispute between the Christian Workers Union and the Port of Belize Limited. As we told you, the union was suggesting that the Ministry isn't doing much to try to resolve this recent labor dispute, which involves the possible termination of 29 union members from the Port of Belize. Well, the Labour Minister of State, Dr Carla Barnett, contacted us to say that the NTUCB failed to mention that they have been part of the bottleneck to deal with this dispute.

BEL's Meter Minders Insist on Transparency
Last week, the Public Utilities Commissioner gave BEL a combination of body blows, attacking the monopoly utility on multiple fronts. First, the PUC lamented that the company was asking for an independent expert to review the PUC's full tariff decision, then, the PUC said that it would have to issue an order forcing BEL to sign a power purchase agreement with Santander. And, then, almost as an aside - when asked to explain the reports of high bills recently - the PUC chairman publicly speculated that BEL was probably just averaging out meter readings rather than sending meter readers to your house. He said this was probably a COVID safety measure.

Long Lines For Educational Grants At HRCU
On Saturday, the line at the Holy Redeemer Credit Union headquarters in Belize went from Hydes Lane, and snaked all the way unto Queen Street. Members were lining up for just about half a million dollars in educational grants. The program started in 2005 and it seems to be needed this year more than ever. Here's more in a video from the Ministry of Education:

106 Negative Tests
The contact tracing exercise for the COVID cases coming out of San Felipe and Blue Creek Villages are encouraging. On Friday 106 samples were processed, and all were negative. The Ministry of health says it has now cleared all the samples processed from the contact tracing in both San Felipe and Blue Creek. But, what about case #39 - the scrap metal dealer in Santa Elena?

Bahamas Closes Its Border To USA
And while Belize is at 40 cases, the Bahamas, which reopened its airports and sea Ports three weeks ago has reported 49 new cases since borders fully opened, for a total of 153 cases. And that's why Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said in a national address on Sunday that American Tourists will be be barred from entering the Bahams amid the re-surging COVID-19 pandemic.

Phased Repatriation Continues
And while that is for tourists, Belizeans keep on coming in. Homeward bound Belizeans returning from a world gone mad with constant states of flux, economic woes, and rising cases of COVID-19. To date 1119 persons have applied to be repatriated, 392 have been repatriated, with 1009 approved and 913 in the process of their coordinated return.

Taiwan Scholarships Still Rolling On
As we've told you many of those repatriates are students returning from study abroad programs. And yet, in the midst of the global pandemic, a group of 48 young Belizeans have won scholarships to embark on degree programs in Taiwan. This morning the Embassy of Taiwan announced its annual orientation in which it's set to offer the highest number of Belizean scholarships to recipients of the Taiwan ICDF and MOFA scholarships since the inception of the programs in 2002.

Update On Belize's Entry Protocols and The Bahamas Closes to US Travelers
I've been getting SO many questions about the planned re-opening of the International Airport in Belize - scheduled for August 15th. Yes, the airport is re-opening (as of now) but there will be many protocols and restrictions for those arriving. The Belize Tourism Board has been slowly releasing information and updates like the answer to question #53 - perhaps the one that I get the most often: 53. How long will these protocols (testing, social distancing, restricted movement, etc.) be in place?

'My Experience Traveling from Belize to America during COVID-19'
Four months after Belize closed its borders, my husband and I travelled from Belize to Chicago, USA on a repatriation flight on July 17, 2020. Below, you'll find my first-hand experience. Our journey started at the Philip Goldson International Airport, where only ticketed passengers were allowed within the terminal. Much like every public place in Belize, face masks are mandatory inside the airport and for the entirety of your journey. At check-in, a sneeze guard of plexiglass separated the agent and ourselves. Meanwhile, security was as per usual; in the departure terminal, social distancing was requested with no rebuttals - everyone seemed more than willing to follow the rules. At the waiting area near the gate, every other seat was blocked off to ensure physical distancing between passengers waiting to board the flight.

My Wild Escape Into the Parrot Protection Program
Crouching by the side of the opaque, muddy waters of Belize's Raspaculo River, I held back tears while wringing its muck from my socks. I had just fallen in after a failed attempt to support myself using a dead tree, which broke under my weight and sent me sidelong into the river. You can't do this, you shouldn't have tried, you should leave right now, I angrily thought to myself. Until I remembered: There was no way out. Three days before this incident, I was just beginning my 14-day stint in the Chiquibul National Park as a volunteer protecting scarlet macaws from pet trade poachers. At the time, a Belizean nonprofit called Scarlet Six deployed volunteers like me into the jungle to support their efforts to rebuild the rapidly dwindling population of these birds. I had fallen in love with Belize a few months prior during my honeymoon, so when I found out I could play a tangible role in supporting their wildlife conservation efforts, I jumped at the opportunity.
