jeff, i learned 'merheba' (hello), and that's it. flailing hand gesturing and big smiles go very far there, as everywhere. had MANY long conversations with folks who spoke no or little english. they have a terrific sense of humor.

NYG, fun owed me big time, and you know it. no fun at all for a few years there. now i have someone who shares my interests to travel with...and it has become our new passion. travel is breaking us financially, but where there's a will...

thinking thailand or mo'orea next....but bz is always in my soul. boyfriend reluctant to come since my past was there with me, so maybe thinking north mainland sometime with him instead of cayo again. can anyone tell me of adventures there?

SJ: Thailand sounds good to me - Moorea has been conquered and it was beautiful. Ms. Gela and I will be traveling to the Cook Islands next year to check out a new destination (Rarotonga and Aitutaki) - just love those names.

Glad to hear you had a fun trip!

Wooo Hoooo Laurie! (I can trade my timeshare for a place in Thailand laugh )

SJ - your pictures have always been outstanding, with no exception.

I have a good friend who is from Turkey. Some day I hope to tag along on one of her family trips.

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/07/06 02:24 PM

HI GELA!!! nice to hear from you! hey laurie, i would really like to know more about that part of the world, as we only can see it on the internet or books. (our huge world map is laying here open to that area, so i see where you are talking about.) can we email sometime? looked at bora bora too (my sis went 2x, & i think you were there as well?) but is a bit pricey, as we are budget travellers. am interested in that entire area, cook isl, bali, samoa, etc, but as it is a 15+ hr flight for us, want to try to make the right choice. can you send me your email in a pm or something? thx.

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/07/06 02:35 PM

oh, and gela and rhon, thanks so much for the nice words about my pics. means a lot to me. truely.

for you both, turkey, like bz, isnt for everyone. it is VERY hot this time of year, and the flight is very long. the sites are far away from each other (we rented a car & did the "independent adventure" thing) the draws are the people, culture, & history. like all trips, i stayed FAR away from cities, opting for visits to small old villages. to us, it was a good choice.

rhon - yep, still in bucks county, with my cute guy. how far north of me are you? hope this finds you all well.

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/07/06 08:36 PM

Jane, I was in Morea many moons ago and have also traveled to Fiji. The Cook Islands seems like the next step. Love the South Pacific but hate the long flight - can't even imagine it coming from the East! You could always break up your trip and stay in the Bay Area @ Gela's B&B laugh

How wonderful you have found someone who loves to explore as much as you do!

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/07/06 09:36 PM

My dream destination is either the Maldives or the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. Hopefully, one day! The big 5-0 is coming up in a few years and hopefully, I will find myself in an exotic locale like that!

Raro . . .beautiful island. That said, you two want to see if you can't adventure out to some of the other islands in the Cooks while you are there.

Gela! Cook Islands? hmmmm need an escort? eek

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/09/06 02:54 PM

Seashell: which island(s) should we try to get to besides the 2 main ones visitors travel to?

Denny: don't know how Gela would answer your question, but book it, Danno! A long flight!

I'm gathering that you are planning on going to Aikutaki(sp?) since you say you are going to the two main islands. I just meant that you should try to go there too. I didn't see any of the other islands but a little research shows that there are some really neat things to see. I had planned to include Aiku and maybe Mano(I think it is) but I only had 14 days. I was diving and whenever I'm diving, it's hard for me to stop and do something else. Also, Aiku was another healthy chunk of change just for the airfare, when I only intended to spend a couple of days there. Maybe next time.

Yes, planning on Atutaki, but still lots of research to do!

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/10/06 06:15 PM

Deacon: It is never hard to find tequila anywhere if one brings a bottle in their backpack, as is my standard MO. LOL. Why spend precious vacation time searching for it?

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/11/06 03:59 AM

Well it wasn't Manu I was thinking of, though it did start with an M. smile In any event, one of the other islands has some cool caves and formations on the outer shore that you can kayak through. So whichever island that was . . hee hee. I tried to find the website that I'd used to educate myself before my trip there and unfortunately, I can't find it. Hope you guys have a great time. Raro is a lovely, lovely island and there are lots of beaches that you can go to that at certain times of the day, have no one, no one on them.

While we were staying at the Edgewater, I'd been sitting staring out at the water wondering what it was that I found so very different from Ambergris and many other islands I've been to. I took me a couple of days and then I realized . . there were no boats going back and forth, I mean NO boats, not even one. Not a one to be seen even out on the horizon. That was so cool!

And all that said, I recommend that you do NOT stay at the Edgewater. I do recommend that you stay somewhere on Muri beach. I found the Shangri La to be a great accommodation for location, price and particularly what you get for that price. I'm not sure that they have any cabanas with two beds in them though.

My friends stayed in a fabulous private beachfront house that has its own little pool. It was in an even better location. If you two are interested, I can easily find the name of it for you.

All that said, you may want to consider staying in a larger resort (other than the Edgewater) to more easily meet people.

For those heading to the Cook Islands. I have a friend who has been several times, and loved it. She finally came to Belize with me last November and she says she will never go back to the Cook Islands! One more traveler spoiled by Ambergris Caye! laugh

well well well, KC??? where ya been girl? hi too to teenah. nice to hear from you both. thanks for the kind words.

hey gela...watch what you offer...we both love your area too, and might take you up on the B&B stay!! i believe turkey was as long a trip as the pac rim...believe it or not. the means justify the end wink

oh, so many travel destinations, so little funds... (if anyone is sobbing for me, donations are being accepted)

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/11/06 11:59 PM

Seashell: I consulted my Cook Islands mag and wonder whether you are talking about Manuae, Mitiaro, Mauke or Mangala - all in the Cooks. The caves sound interesting.

Has anyone been to the Maldives or Seyschelles?

By the way, Gela's B&B is great - if you ever find yourself over there, ask her for a tour of the Hayes Mansion and also Sarah's special spa treatment!

LOL Laurie laugh Too funny.

Jane, you are most welcome to come for a stop over. My house is basic, but it's those "perks" Laurie talks about that gives it its charm.

P.S. Sara - she's my 5 year old Persian who loves having guests. wink

I wish I could tell you which M island it was but since I can't find the website, I can't find the pictures. Without the pictures, I can't figure out which M island it is.

How long are you guys going for?

kc - sent you a PM!!

otherwise, i think we are going to try for southeast costa rica (caribbean side) in nov. the airfare is great, and i've been way too jealous of all of you who have had lobster for thanksgiving instead of turkey (bleh). my turn this year!!

...any input from the peanut gallery will be appreciated smile

Re: nothing to do with bz at all, as usual - 07/18/06 04:52 PM

Jane: You will love it there. Check out Azania Bungalows in Cocles (near Puerto Viejo). Gela found it on web and we stayed there. Great breakfast included and you will hear very loud sounds of the animals and birds (especially monkeys) in the jungle at night. It is the only place I saw a toucan in the wild. Look into Interbus to take you over there from San Jose. I have been to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica twice - beautiful jungle, good food.

Just don't drink too much wine and start dancing in your room and tear the mosquito netting from the ceiling. LOL.
