Samuel B. Shulman. "Survey in China and India of Feet That Have Never Worn Shoes," The Journal of the National Association of Chiropodists, 49, 1949, pp. 26-30.

The low incidence of dermatomycotic infection here noted might be attributed to the fact that most foot fungi require dark, warm and damp interdigital spaces for growth such as that provided by shoes and stockings on a foot that has no free outlet for its perspiration. In addition, these bare feet get the beneficial fungicidal effects of the sun's ultra-violet rays.
...
No instances among the barefoot feet were found of: Onychrocryptosis, Hyperidrosis, Bromidrosis, Hallux Valgus, Hallux Varus, Bursitis at the first or fifth metatarso-phalangeal articulations.
...
Almost everyone surveyed showed a marked spacing between the first and second toes such as that found on young babies. The great toe was either pointing straight ahead or slightly abducted to provide a greater weight-bearing base or, possibly, to compensate for a shortened first metatarsal segment.
...
One hundred and eighteen of those interviewed were rickshaw coolies. Because these men spend very long hours each day on cobblestone or other hard roads pulling their passengers at a run it was of particular interest to survey them. If anything, their feet were more perfect than the others. All of them, however, gave a history of much pain and swelling of the foot and ankle during the first few days of work as a rickshaw puller. But after either a rest of two days or a week's more work on their feet, the pain and swelling passed away and never returned again. There is no occupation more strenuous for the feet than trotting a rickshaw on hard pavement for many hours each day yet these men do it without pain or pathology.
These figures prove that restrictive footgear, particularly ill-fitting footgear, cause most of the ailments of the human foot.

...
Baby shoes cause great harm to growing, formative feet. The so-called "sentimental" value of baby's shoes might well be dispensed with.
...
People who have never worn shoes acquire very few foot defects, most of which are painless and non-debilitating. The range of their foot motions are remarkably great, allowing for full foot activity. Shoes are not necessary for healthy feet and are the cause of most foot troubles. Children should not be encouraged to walk prematurely and should not wear any footwear until absolutely necessary. Footgear is the greatest enemy of the human foot.

One of my favorite things is finding a sexy pair of shoes that are comfortable and in my size! laugh

Hahahahaha! Actually when he was buying them the clerk initially thought he was looking for them for himself. He asked for red pumps and she gave him a queer look and asked what size he wore! laugh laugh

law - sexy: yes, comfortable: who cares! Hubby knows my tastes and has yet to disappoint. He even included a promise to keep me "well shod" in his wedding vows! laugh (kinda sounds like a horse, now that I think about it...)

Lucky you, Nova! A fair number of mine don't meet the "comfortable" criteria and it certainly isn't a prerequisite, but as I said, when I can find a pair that is, that event goes on my favorite things list! smile Part of my difficulty is that I have really long, narrow feet. The good part of that is that my size is always on the sale racks! smile

Isn't this so much more fun than that football thread?! wink

Re: Footgear is the greatest enemy of the human foot - 10/01/06 03:23 PM

Heck yeah! In addition to collecting shoes, I also paint them. On canvas, that is. Then I hand bead them, have them framed, and sell them in a local gallery. The collection is called "Be Heeled!" (Can you say "Amen"!) laugh laugh

Rykat, once again, LEAVE nr.nuts ALONE!!! laugh laugh You're not the only one who finds it funny, the other board members at the meetings in Montreal tormented him to no end. It's a standing joke now, each time they meet he has to show them all what he bought for me!

Law, thanks for the link, I'll try it...

Re: Footgear is the greatest enemy of the human foot - 10/01/06 04:02 PM

AMEN!!
!
I've only 96 pairs..of which 10 pairs I've never worn. But they are pretty.

Books, I just noted I have more than 96 books, therefore I need to buy more SHOES, to even the collections.

I've started buying shoes for other people (family), and that gives me that shoe FIX.

Ok law, I tried it, but it posted the pic, not the link....don't want that, it's HUGE!

Chloe, I hear you! I usually read 3-4 books a week, but always pass them on to friends. Shoes, on the other hand, stay home where they belong! My 11 yr old is developing her own shoe addiction...finally!!! She's a tomboy, so it was a long time in the making. She's a size smaller than me, but the bumming has begun. (Turquoise cowboy boots "borrowed" this week!) laugh

COOL....thanks for sharing, Nova.

My sister's last written request, is to be buried in a pair of high heels. I'm not bad.

Re: Footgear is the greatest enemy of the human foot - 10/04/06 05:37 PM

On my 50th birthday my daughter gave me a birthday card that on the outside said:
They say you can tell the age of as woman by the number of pairs of shoes she has!
On the inside it said happy 189th birthday. I was so upset I went home and counted my shoes. By giving away a few I brought the number down to 50.
