My husband and I like to get away from the hectic work schedules and spend time on the beach, swimming, snorkel (have not started to dive as yet), and AC looks so inviting. Does anyone have any positive/negative things to say about Captain Morgans Vacation Beach Club and-or Costa Maya Reef Resort? Thinking of planning sometime in Nov - Dec for 2 weeks. Any suggestions?
Stay in town the first trip...Bannana Beach or AquaMarina...
You'll be glad you did. Unless you like being at one place and not exploreing. Being in town allows you to see more without the hassle of taking a water taxi back each night.

If you want luxury, try Victoria House..
just my opinion...
Much as I love BB (my home away from home), Axe, I would not consider it "in town". Looks to me like the OP's might possibly be thinking of trying to swap out timeshare weeks.
Ahhh...righto..at least it's no boat ride..was trying to suggest an alternate place that might be more private. Your spot on tho..
realize there are two areas of ambergris, north of cut and the rest. cm's is north of cut,and to get to town one must take water taxi, which stops at 10pm ish (is that still true gang?). i no nothing about the other place. i don't know of any place one can swim or snorkel off the beaches, just off the piers. the beach is shallow and has sea grass. that said, AC has magnificently beautiful beaches all up and down.

i prefer to be out of town, some like in town. for south of town (my pref), check out xanadu, thatch and pretty, good reputation. sooo many choices, do not limit yourself to what you see on the net, look at lodgings on this site for other good options.
Captain Morgans is beautiful LtoZ. Only 3 miles south.
(she lives there & knows better than i...listen to her!)
I would not listen to all my advice, it depends on the individual of course! All opinions count. There is something for everyone. Captain Morgan's is beautiful to me and it is 3 miles north (that part can not be disputed, lol!)
understood, k. i just know that when i stayed at journey's end long ago, it was lovely but i felt trapped there. plus, i thought reviews were overrated for service etc. MHO. did next 3 visits south and now continue. liked to be on my own schedule. as you said, to each his own.

ahh. well it is definately good to have everyones opinion as they all count equally when it comes to this stuff. some love seclusion and others dislike it. Something for everyone, ya know?!
swimming from beach? Sure, wade in....Mar De Tumbo recognized as one of the finest beaches on AC, in SP for sure. South of town by Banyan Bay & Banana Beach.
Thanks for the suggestions- yes we are trading a timeshare and want a place that is not like a hotel and private. More than likely our excursions into town would be during the day. At night like to stay close to home and walk the beach, eat at resturants on the beach- are there resturants on the beach in those area's?? there has to be???? I thought captain morgans was north of san pedro? Was there a bridge connecting san pedro to the north- or was that my imagination?? If the bridge is an option about how long of a walk- 1 hour or more? there are also two other places and I believe aqua marina was one of them and the yacht club or something like that?
It is North, you received conflicting info from the same poster and there is a bridge. Not a walk I'd recommend making, especially at night.

I guess errors in typing are acceptable. The place only moves if in error. Kindness is always accepted. smile

Guess it turns out everyone needs a mouthpiece once in a while! smile
I stayed at Capt. Morgan's recently. Lovely beach, cold pools, service is below average. Some units are very nice, the cabanas are well worn. Everything is clean. No TV-on a rainy day this can be a bummer. The internet is available sporadicly. I had both fairly good meals there and one awful meal that the staff was unconcerned about. One night they closed the resturant at 8:30 and the bar at 9. A short walk away is another resturant Capicorn which has good food and lovely setting. Also expensive. There is also a pizza place that will deliver, will fill the void but nothing to write home about. The ride to town is $14bz each way most hours from 7am till midnight. This can add up pretty fast if there are 2 of you. Captain Morgans will take you in a 10am and return at 2pm (?) for 5bz each way. If you decide to stay ask for a unit away from the construction - they start before 7am
My first two visits here I stayed at Paradise Villas - a five minute walk to the center of town but far enough away to be mostly quiet. That is as long as you don't take one of the back units up against the road. Next door is the Blue Tang where I stayed on the 3rd visit and it has been fixed up beautifully. Both these places are in the reasonable price range.
If you are interested in time share or to be left alone then Capt. Morgan's could work. It is beautiful but since the price of gas is so high it costs more to get to town and back.
i second scubalady.
I'd stay close to town on your first trip and then explore and plan your next trip. I know trading can limit your choices that's what we were faced with. Stayed at Costa Maya and weren't happy (a couple of years ago) but it has lots of potential and maybe it's improved. Bet you a dollar you'll love the island and the people.
I spoke with a couple folks staying up at Costa Maya a few weeks ago and they were very happy with the place. Perhaps a week up there to relax and then a week in town would be nice.
It seems to be the groups idea to stay in town for a week then the next out farther--hmmm.... Like Danza said you have to take what you can with a time share exchange.

Hey, is there a casino in town?
You want a casino go to vegas - you could time-share into there. To say "it's not much" is an understatement.
Can you timeshare into Costa Maya? If so maybe a week there and a week at Capt. Morgans.
gambling on AC means having too much fun, drinking way too much and taking the chance you will actually find your way back to the hotel room.
Indygal-- yes I can timeshare to Costa Maya. We spend the month of May down in Baja. With that said the water in baja- pacific and sea of cortez is not the caribean- duh?? Never been out east and are looking for the perfect first time trip. You know I am in California and 20 blocks from the pacific ocean, but it's a little different here in northern california! It's cold!! Year long where I live!
Does AC get cold? If yes - what month should I avoid?
