New Stem Cell Research Hospital

New Stem Cell Research Hospital - 02/11/08 12:53 AM

I read id the DAily that a new, big bucks, stem cell research hospital was to be built near the International Airport, and that some in the health department were upset because they were afraid the new Yankee doctors might be "Practicing" medicine there and treating the sick. If they were, would that be bad for the country's health system?

One of the "doctors" there is on the lam from the US, there was a big flap about it a couple of months ago. The researchers say" we are not practicing" so we do not need to be licensed in Belize!

It would be really bad for the health care system because there would be no licensing board that oversaw the work. All of the Belizean doctors have degrees and board certifications that are regularly updated. They have continuing education hours mandated by law. There is little recourse for the patient if the "Yankee" doctors screw up. There are avenues for a physician to be accredited here and to practice. Admittedly, it is not easy but it shouldn't be.

I'm with you Pam,,, but for other reasoning perhaps. As long as the government and the health department controls who can practice medicine in Belize it seems unlikely that some foreign medical "money group" will come to San Pedro and build a state of the art hospital just so that hundreds of new and retiring foreign doctors can bask in the sun and fish instead of playing golf. I sincerely hope that that scenario never takes place because if it did, San Pedro would become ANOTHER MIAMI BEACH with a million retired shop keepers from New York. Don't think there is enough sand on AC to accommodate that.
