Have you looked into the yucatan express ? their url is
http://www.yucatanexpress.com/ good-luck, mel s..........
wow, Cheri, that could get very expensive. No way you can just tranquilize and fly them commerical with you? Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are needing, and you really aren't looking for a private charter. But.......
You could see if Air Athens still operates out of Addison airport. If they cannot help you, maybe they could point you in the right direction. Or call any of the private charter companies in the phone book. I would think out of 3 airports there, although DFW is so commercial, you could reach somebody that could give you some answers.
If you really want to check into chartering a private flight, you could email this site and ask for recommendations on how to achieve the results you are looking for, but finding a private charter there locally would have to be a little less expensive.
http://www.aircharternetwork.com I have a buddy who pilots for Continental and asked him for suggestions, but not knowing his flight schedule, I have no idea when he might answer. Plus, he is houston based - not dallas.
Good luck
Mel,
The Yucatan Express has announced it will not resume service to the Yucatan this fall. Maybe sometime in 2004.

try a web search on pet shipping
http://www.puppydogweb.com/articles/shipping.htm#Organizations%20that%20Ship%20Pets
Cheri, you might really want to look into those pet shipping organizations that are listed on the site that ChrisW provided. Here is what my friend with Continental said:
As for your friend with the pets I am afraid that if they will not fit under the seats in a pet carrier that the only way to Belize is in the cargo compartment. I can't speak for American but Continental puts pets in a climate controlled cargo area and they do not put then in until its time to leave the gate so they won't get overheated. The Capt. signs a receipt for the pets at the time of delivery to the plane and has a maximum time period the plane can be on the ground before the plane must return to the gate and the pets removed for there safety. Continental is very conscientious when it comes to pets after law suits a decade ago.The only alternative is a private charter flight in a small plane, there are many in Dallas/Ft.Worth area but very expensive.
...a little over a month ago, my wife and I moved our 4 (yes FOUR, a 95lb lab, two 70lb husky-mixes and a scrappy little 34lb mutt) dogs from SF to Ambergris via Miami... Once in Miami, we boarded the dogs for a night with a Co called Pet Limo (
www.petlimo.com) ...The next morning, we flew on ahead of the dogs on American and the dogs flew out that evening in kennels as cargo on Amerijet. We were waiting at the airport to pick them up when the flight landed (at 11:00 pm) and they cleared customs/were on a boat with us back to A.C. about an hour later... All in all a much smoother experience than what we were expecting... the dogs were in great hands the entire time. Amerijet has flights form Miami twice a week, tuesdays and thursdays.
SFJeff- What did it cost to ship each dog? We have 2 we need to get there. Thanks.
The shipping was actually not that expensive. Amerijet charges either by gross weight (an issue when you ship a lab!) or by volume, whichever is greater... I think it averages about $1 and change a pound. What was slightly more expensive but totally worth it was having Pet Limo pick up and drop off the dogs while we flew ahead of them... the couple that runs the service is wonderful, and they deal with Ameriejet all the time... They'll keep in close touch with the airline to ensure the flight is on schedule, and drop off the dogs at the latest time possible, so the dogs spend as minimal time in their kennels as possible. Pick up, boarding, drop off was about $275/dog (though they actually cut us a deal as we had 4.)
that really was a good deal, much less expensive than chartering a flight. I hope Cheri can do the same out of Dallas.
FYI,
There is an article about pet shipping in the Houston Chronicle, business section, this am that may be worth reading.
http://www.houstonchronicle.com Richard :p
I wonder if she is reading all of this
She's MIA
I'm here and thanks guys-all great info. We have a Plan "A" and a "B" and I could really use all the prayers i can get for Plan "A".....so help me out here. ADAM, only small pets can fly in cabin, if you know something different...do tell. We're talking 2 Chows here...that are PRECIOUS to me! Commercially is last resort. And i would choose Continental...AA doesn't seem to have as much to "offer" as they do. Anyone know the "flight time" from out of Houston to BZ? Thanks and blessings to you all!!!! C
Houston to Philip G is a sweet 2 hours 15 minutes most of the time.
Good God! What is the problem - You do not want the advice you have been given.
If they are that dear to you -rent a Lear and be done with it -no problem there
I thought Rick said Coconuts was flying you down on a lear jet anyhow????
the plane was to small for the dogs and people
Peter I'm not RICH....or I would. I have taken in all the info here and it's much appreciated. Most is just a "service" that escorts your dogs, without you. And ya know, it wouldn't hurt or cost you anything to show some kindness every once in awhile. Waiting on some emails back from the info from here. Thanks ya'll!! C
Oh yea, there Pete-could I borrow the $$$ from you????
Contact Rose Flores at <
[email protected]> for assistance in getting the permits you will need to bring in your pets.
I believe most airlines will fly your pets "with you" ------ as special baggage, providing that conditions are appropriate. The issues at this time of year are all about the survival of your pet - most carriers do not fly pets in "summer" due to potential of heat-realted death in transit. I had excellent service for my cats (in two kennel-carriers that went into cargo ) long, long ago - with American Airlines. At that time they seemed to be the most pet-aware of the various airlines. Cost (then) was $50 per carrier, the cats were taken out for a long-layover in Miami (for an extra $50 loading fee) so that we could give them some love.
IMHO - your pets deserve the protection of having a human escort.
You can fly cats in the cabin, its much safer and less stressful on the animals.
Thanks Diane-I believe we are good to go!!! (permits) and we're good on this end too. Rick has all the info from our vet there with him, and all I got to do is go by and get their permits before I leave. (paperwork) rabies etc....do they have to be in "kennels" to go thru customs there or can you walk them through???? Miss "A", you get my email. C
Well, all I can say is "beware" to anyone wanting to visit Rick and Cheri once their Chow Chows are in their new Ambergris Caye home. Chows have a reputation (rather deserved) for being over-loyal to their owners to the point of viciousness to anyone and anything else. The hot weather of Belize allied with their long thick fur will not help their "friendly" dispositions!
http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeds/chows.html
It is SO wrong to judge a dog by it's breed! Our neighbors son raises Pit Bulls. His parents have 2 and they are the most GENTLE dogs. One does nothing but lick your feet if you have on sandles. The other is just a big baby. Are you also worried about Basset Hounds?
Those tea-cup chihuahuas are the scariest dogs i've run across. Make de chows look like kittens.
I'm sure their dogs are well mannered and well cared for, their adjustment will be just like any other dog or person. Time will mellow them, they will be Belizeans soon
cHRIS YOU ARE RIGHT!!! But it's 110 degrees in the shade here...their furr adapts!!!!..They are loyal....I plan on bringing a couple of pups to breed in November...interested???? C
There are plenty of dogs to adopt on the island why bring more to breed?
Be 100% sure you have the "Belize" side of your permits together - I found out the hard way not to rely on Belize reps stateside - they are not always kept up to date on the latest requirements.
Yes Simon, you are right...plan on adopting a couple.....is "Ghost" still around??? C
Chris...anyone who visits while we're home would never be in any kind of danger. Now-try to COME IN with no one home, a much different story. They are good dogs!!! I loved the website you posted!! Thanks!! Oh, and if anyone tried to hurt either of us..that might present a problem too.
this is an intresting thread.
i was going to start a new thread but maybe i'll just post in this one for now.
heres my questions:
1. would it be out of line to want to bring my three big dogs down to caye caulker for the month - month and a half i plan on spending there this winter?
2. would i have to use a water taxi to get them out to the island?
3. oh nevermind, i think its easier just to leave them home.
someday i want to bring my dogs down. my big boy dog would love it. he such a freak about the ocean. he will swimm all day if you let him.
i live in maine and he swims for hours between the ice flows in the winter.
but for now i think the hassel of getting 2 pits and a rott through customs and what not is too much for me.
Great!!! More breeding dogs in San Pedro.
I daydream often, of seeing my little dog, on Ambergis, she would be a really happy pup, San Pedro is her style, meeting and greeting everyone daily. running the streets.
Sounds like you been dreaming about Paisano. HEE HEE!!
I daydream often, of seeing me, on Ambergis, I would be a really happy pup, San Pedro is my style, meeting and greeting everyone daily. running the streets, peeing on trees....oops
we are bringing 2 dogs and a siamese cat down in Nov. to live also, maybe they will be on the same plane together
I need papers from the agulculture dept to get the permits to bring in my 3 small yorkshire terriers. I have tried to contact the ag. dept and I get no response. Does anyone have the papers to import the dogs? Thanks Ruby M. Wood
Ruby,
OK, see if youcan get someone in San Pedro to go to the agriculture office (next to the customs office) in San Pedro (white corner bldg, just down from the Travel agency), and fill out the paperwork there for you. It cost $10 BZ per animal. They will fax paperwork over to the airport for your arrival. That's the easiest way. If my husband was there now, I'd get him to do it, but he is still in the States.
Have you checked with the airlines yet about allowing 3 animals on the same flight? I've been told the max is 2 (for in-cabin-- and I'd think with yorkie's, you'd want them up front).
Good luck!!
Cheerz,
Vicki
you might want to try Dr.Deshield DVM,the e-mail is
[email protected], but...i hear btl is not all there right now, so the phone is 001-501-224-5230
make sure everything is stamped correctly on the Belize side and do check on the no. of dogs you can bring.good luck.
Hi Rick and Cheri,
I realize you guys may not want a car in Belize, as you'll be living on Ambergris, but you know, the drive is beautiful, and it really only takes 3 days from the American border. We took our two dogs and two cats, and actually found several hotels that would take us with the pets (it helped that it seemed to be off-season). We drove with them both there and back, and had no problems whatsoever. The only grief is all the paperwork you have to do for the vehicle at the borders.
I know our one dog would not be happy with the plane travel, as she has enough issues with separation anxiety already.
Just a thought, and hope you have a good trip whichever way you can get things to work.
twospotdog, would you mind emailing me about your driving trip down?
