Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) experienced several intermittent power outages across the country yesterday.

A fault on the power system caused the Mollejon Hydroelectric Facility to trip at 7:30 a.m. yesterday, which resulted in loss of power supply to the Central, Western and Southern Zones, and at 8:13 a.m., that fault caused the Comisión Federal de Electricidad system (CFE) system that feeds Belize to trip. This resulted in a loss of power supply to the Northern Zone. Between 8:26 a.m. and 9:07 a.m. power supply was restored to all affected areas.

At 6:51 p.m. yesterday, a trip occurred on the distribution system along the Hummingbird Highway, which caused the power system in the Central, Western and Southern Zones to lose power supply, and at 7:07 p.m. power supply was lost to the Northern Zone. Between 7:18 p.m. and 7:43 p.m. power was restored to all affected areas.

BEL apologizes for the inconvenience caused by these power outages.

BELIZE ELECTRICITY LIMITED EXPLAINS POWER OUTAGE

Belize Electricity Limited has issued a statement on a series of blackouts that plunged the entire country into darkness last night. Several intermittent power outages were experienced by BEL on Sunday. According to the BEL statement, a fault on the power system caused the Mollejon Hydroelectric Facility to trip at seven thirty yesterday morning. That resulted in the loss of power to the Cayo, Belize, Stann Creek and Toledo district. BEL says that the first trip at 7:30 yesterday morning, caused an interruption to the system that brings in the electricity supply from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad in Mexico. When that feed went down, BEL consumers in the Orange Walk and Corozal districts lost power. But the problems for BEL were not over. Around six fifty one yesterday evening, a trip occurred on the distribution system along the Hummingbird Highway, which caused the power system to lose power again. That meant that the Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo districts were again plunged into blackout. About ten minutes later, power supply to the north was lost again. The Belize Electricity Limited says that technicians were able to restore power to all the affected areas by seven forty five last night.
