The Return Of "Rambo-town"
There was a broad daylight murder in Orange Walk Town this morning. Jose Medina, who was lying low in the town, was shot and killed a stone’s throw away from the house he moved to a few weeks ago.
His girlfriend, Lucia Luna, who got injured in Medina’s street execution, is currently hospitalized in a critical condition. Residents say that Medina knew that he had a target on his back, and that he did what he could protect himself. But, at around 11:00 this morning, a shooter ambushed him right at the alley that leads to his house. 7News travelled to Orange Walk Town to try to find out what was behind this latest killing, and Daniel Ortiz tries to connect the dots in a dizzying succession of gang murders in that town. Here’s that story:

Man Survives Butane Explosion With Burns
Tonight a 65 year old resident of San Isidro village in the Toledo District is admitted to the Southern Regional Hospital with burns to his face and hand.  He should be home by tonight, but, the truth is, he is lucky to be alive after he survived an LPG explosion that completely destroyed his Ford van.   Around 6:00 yesterday, Jose Tomas Rosales was filling up his taxi van with butane when the tank inside the van exploded.  Police told us more: Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino - CIB: "The 10th of October, Bella Vista police were called to San Isidro Village in the Stann Creek District. They had received information of an explosion at the butane gas depot, Garcia's Butane Gas Depot. On arrival they spoke to persons out there and they gathered that Jose Tomas Rosales, 65 year old taxi driver was at the gas depot putting butane in his 2004 Ford 350 van and whilst doing that he lighted a cigarette and that caused the fumes to spark..."

Fire Dept. Says Not So Sure of Cigarette Fire Starter
But the Fire Department isn’t so sure that he was smoking.  Today, operations officer Benesford Matura said they are still investigating:… Benesford Matura - Operation Officer, BNFS: "Apparently while filling the van, there was a flash, a leak somewhere with the butane and it flashed and caused the butane tank that was placed at the rear inside the van, behind the last seat to explode. The only person that got injured was the said owner and driver Mr. Rosales. He got burns basically to the upper body, face, two arms and his chest area."

BNTU Swinging For Stevedores
The utility workers came out yesterday saying they support the stevedores in their industrial dispute with the port of Belize.  And, now, the Belize National Teachers Union has done the same.   The BNTU sent out a release today saying “we at the BNTU fully understand…the frustration of stevedores…the BNTU stands firm in its continued support of our brothers and sisters of the CWU and wish them well on the road to finding a resolution to the current impasse….the BNTU…is prepared to take the necessary…action to ensure their negotiations conclude in a timely manner. We will not sit idly by and watch our brothers continue to be disadvantaged..”

Southern Caucus Called In to Leader's Office
On Tuesday you saw the PUP Southern Caucus, and members of the Western Caucus forge out on their own - ahead of their party - to meet with the anti-ICJ Peace Movement.   When we asked them about whether it would displease their party leader - they clearly said that he was “ok” with it: Hon. Oscar Requena, Toledo West: "The party met and we had extensive discussions. Coming out of our national executive meeting the decision was made that we are going to vote our conscience. I think it is important that we lay that on the table, because the party leader has gone on record to say that we are all entitled to our own individual positions and we are making that out. As leaders we need to speak to other leaders in this country who I believe shares common interest, common issues and I think that is what we are doing today."

Decoding That Special Gift to City Hall
A Chinese businesswoman in Belmopan has had her special gift to the Belize City Council returned.  It was an envelope stuffed with fifty $50 dollar bills - nicely left on the city administrator’s desk on Tuesday.   The “gift” was reportedly from Liu Nan, the owner of Office Station an stationery and office supplies business in Belmopan.   The City Administrator Stephanie Garbutt handed the envelope over to the Mayor who wrote to Nan yesterday saying, quote, “this was not the first time you have attempted to leave a gift for her. The first incident she returned and asked that it not be offered again.  Additionally I have received reports that you stuffed a one hundred dollar not in the hands of our Park Manager after he received the garbage bags that we purchased from you.”

Mayor's Meet on Hopkins Beach
The Mayor was not in the city to address the press today. He was in Hopkins village at a Mayor’s Association retreat.  They were there to learn about an review the child friendly initiative - which is to make municipal governance more inclusive. Minister of State for Local Government Dr. Carla Barnett told the government press office more:… Hon. Dr. Carla Barnett - Minister of State, Local Government: "Well the mayor's retreat is aimed at looking at the implementation of the sustainable and child friendly municipalities’ initiative; it's been an implementation since 2014. Several of the municipalities have been implementing projects and programs under this initiative. They've all established their child advisory board which seeks to involve the children in the design and implementation of projects."

Cops Mum On Bobby Garcia Murder Investigation
On last night’s news, we told you about the two male minors, ages 14 and 15, who have been arrested and charged for the weekend's strange murder of 19 year-old Bobby Garcia, a resident of San Ignacio Town. Our sources told us that the investigators got what is believed to be the murder weapon, and they recorded  a caution statement from one of the minors who confessed to the killing, saying that he participated in it as part of an initiation ritual to join an emo cult.  It is a matter of intense public interest, more so because the Cahal Pech Archaeological Site was used to kill this teenager, and so the press tried to get additional information out of police. But, today the police spokesperson didn’t say much:

Mile 8 Housebreaker Caught on Camera
35 year-old Mario Zelaya, a wood carver of a Raccoon Street Extension address in Belize City, was taken to court for breaking into a man’s home at mile 8 an a half on the George Price Highway. The incident occurred on October 8 at the home of 34 year old Manuel Castillo in  Sunset Park on the Western Highway - and it was caught on camera.   Castillo left his house along with his wife and their two children around 7:20 a.m., to go to Belize City. His house is equipped with two surveillance cameras that he and his wife can monitor via their cell phones. He said that at about 12:30 p.m., his wife called him and told him that she noticed that one of the cameras was pointed in the wrong direction. As you can see, it is barely capturing the image of the alleged housebreaker.

16 Yr. Sentence Whittled Down to 8 Months
Tonight, 26 year-old Oscar Maldonado, and 32 year-old Jewel Palma are at the Belize Central Prison serving out the rest their prison sentence for the 2009 killing of the Taiwanese businessman, Tsong Min Liou. Their sentence of 16 years was whittled down to 8 months by Justice Colin Williams on Friday.   Both men were charged with murder for Liou’s death, but they both pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.  Arriving to this sentence Justice Collin Williams said he took into consideration that they had pleaded guilty and saved the court time, that several character witnesses had testified on their behalf and that Maldonado was a minor when he committed the offence.

Riding For Prostate Health And Awareness
It’s Cancer Awareness month - and this weekend the focus is on prostate cancer in men.   That’s the object of the cancer ride - which is in its third year. Organizer Heather Reneau told us more:… Heather Reneau - Senior Administrator, BCS: "We have our prostate cancer awareness ride which coming up this weekend, it's called our cancer challenge and it takes place this Saturday leaving Drums of our Fathers in Dangriga and we go to San Ignacio, the Macal River Park and then we leave from the Benque border the following morning at 6 AM and we come to Belize. A Solider's Solemn Funeral
Belizean born US soldier, Adrienne Barrillas was buried in Belize on Tuesday with a full US military honours. It made for quite an unusual scene at St. Joseph’s Church where she had also gone to school as a child.  Her casket also arrived in Belize with a full US Army escort. In late September, 22 year old Barrillas died under still unknown circumstances at a US military base in Seoul, South Korea where she was stationed. The report from the US military only said that she was found unresponsive and that her death was being investigated by the army’s Criminal Investigation Command.  Barillas had arrived in South Korea in 2017, as a water treatment specialist.  In a brief military career, she had earned the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.

The New Mirabs Department Store: WOW in Belize City
My alarm went off at 4:45am and then again at 4:50am. I do NOT get out of bed this early for just anything. But yesterday was something I've been looking forward to for a while. ESPECIALLY since I got a sneak preview less than one month ago and WAS NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PHOTOS INSIDE!!! I knew that inside and out there is NOTHING like the new 100,000 square foot Mirabs Department Store anywhere in Belize. From the staff locker rooms to the restrooms to the date palms and the landscaping to the cushy chairs placed everywhere around the store - usually for the boyfriend whose shopping stamina is very low - this new store is gorgeous and so thoughtful. The details, big and small, are perfection. So rather than continue to talklet me show you. From my 5:15am golf cart ride on, yesterday was a beauty.

Why Are Most Caribbean Governments Dragging Their Hineys On A $500 Billion Industry?
As per usual, most Caribbean governments are lagging behind the 8th ball when it comes to the multi-billion-dollar industry of marijuana - a herb that easily grown in the region and has for many decades now. The Yucatan Peninsula holds archaeological treasures yet to be discovered
The people who live in the Yucatan Peninsula, integrated by the Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche, have the belief that the soil of the region is so flat that behind any mound or hill there is a great probability to find archaeological remains, and many times this is the case alright. The rural community of Dos Aguadas, which belongs to the municipality of Jos Mara Morelos, in the Maya zone of Quintana Roo, is a clear example of this situation, here most locals not only have to guard their land but they also have to protect what lies beneath the lush vegetation. Dos Aguadas is located very close to the so-called Punto Put, which is where the states of Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatn come together, which make up the Yucatan Peninsula along with Belize and Guatemala.
