The Neil Fraser Historic Belizean Galleria
These photos are taken from a 1948 booklet on
the celebration of the colony's 150th birthday in
1948.

The axemen ready to fell a tree. They stood on
flimsy platforms to get above the buttress roots
of the mahogany tree. These men were skilled
workers and preferred to use axes, they never
adopted the tree saw even though the company
tried to get them to change.

This wonderful photo by an unknown photographer shows a tractor hauling
a mahogany log from the
felling area to the barquadier. It illustrates the devastation to the rain forests
caused by this type of logging.
