The wildlife and diversity of ecosystems that surround the Lamanai Outpost Lodge are simply astounding - vast pine savannahs; pristine spring fed wetlands, tropical jungles, fresh water lagoons and long abandoned Maya cities. We invite you to explore and experience this fascinating area with us. We offer over 23 activities with eleven scheduled departures per day; we specialize in hi-count birding expeditions and custom soft adventure itineraries for individuals, small groups and families.
All tours are fully guided, all are conducted with very small groups and no day trips are required.
Crocodile Encounter
To get you up to speed we start with a field presentation on crocodile biology and research techniques. You will travel by airboat into the floodplains and surrounding waterways where you will observe – and even assist if you wish – as one of our crocodile biologists endeavors to capture, collect data and expand our understanding of the endangered Morelet’s crocodile. Something that most folks only see on television!
Birding Expeditions
With almost 400 species documented within a 3 mile radius and more than 12 specialized birding excursions to choose from, Lamanai Outpost Lodge is definitely Belize’s premier birding location. Habitats range from vast wetlands to broadleaf forest to pine savannah and all are easily accessible by boat, trails, vehicle, airboat or canoe. Our expert birding guides will tailor your activities to access your target species in an environment where 200+ species in 3 days is far from unusual. Our Headlight Canoeing and Spotlight Safari expeditions provide an amazing opportunity to see roosting waders, nocturnals and some of the more elusive diurnal species up close and personal. Regular sightings include the Northern Potoo, Yucatan Nightjar, Common Pauraque and Nighthawk, Grey–necked Wood Rail, Sungrebe and Agami Heron not to mention a variety of non-feathered wildlife. Although not exactly a bird, watching the ‘Greater Bulldog Bats’ hunt along the edges of the lagoon is a fascinating unique experience.
Native Fishing
Fishing becomes a cultural adventure when it’s done jungle-style. You’ll catch live bait using the local “bottle method” and use the most basic of equipment. Paddle out along the banks of the lagoon with a local fisherman and settle into a quiet cove to land Large Mouth Bass and other local species or by special arrangement, strap on a headlight and go night spear fishing from a canoe.
Lamanai Maya Ruins
In the company of an expert guide explore the mysterious jungle shrouded temples of this once powerful 3000 year old civilization where nature and ancient history coexist. The ruins of Lamanai encompass over 700 structures with excavations and reconstructions still underway. Truly fascinating!
Breakfast on the River
Enjoy a tropical breakfast and nature watching from our spacious 30’ pontoon boat as the sun rises over the New River.
Howler Trek
Observe troops of Howler monkeys as they start the day foraging high in the jungle canopy. Babies cling tightly to their mother’s backs under the protective gaze of the dominant male whose call can be heard for miles. Learn about the species’ lifestyle, social dynamics and infant rearing practices.
Airboat Safari
Nature watching and exploration of the area’s floodplains and savannah aboard an everglades style airboat. An exhilarating experience!
Maya Medicine Trail
As the only resource for medicinal aid, indigenous people have long used a wide variety of local plants for their powerful and effective medicinal properties. Unlock the secrets and learn first hand how basic potions and salves are prepared and used to this day in Belize’s jungle villages.
Sunrise Canoe Excursion
Strike out across the lagoon in exploration of Dawson’s Creek and its surrounding flood plains, islands and savannah. Keep an eye out for manatees, otters, crocodiles and endemic parrots to name but a few. Sure to thrill the nature-loving side of all who participate in this adventure.
Cultural Immersion: The Mennonites
It’s time to take up the reins on a Mennonite buggy and learn about their many customs and religious beliefs. Experience first hand what it’s like to live without electricity or any modern day technology as your buggy makes its way through the nearby Mennonite community of Indian Creek. You’ll make stops at the church, school, shop, the local aluminum smelter and hard wood lumber mill before heading over to a Mennonite home to enjoy a farm fresh lunch. A unique and thought provoking experience.
Snook and Tarpon Fishing
Enjoy a relaxing afternoon fishing for Bay Snook, Tilapia and Catfish from the comfort of a twenty foot motorized fishing pontoon boat. If you want to go after one of the giant Tarpon that inhabit the lagoon in large numbers, bring your own fly fishing gear and prepare for a challenge – no trophy fishing - catch and release or prepared for dinner only.
Water Sports and Lunch on the Lagoon
Imagine having a spring fed 28 miles long lagoon all to yourself; gather up family and friends and head out on our spacious 30’ pontoon boat with music, burgers, hotdogs, ice cold drinks, service staff and a jet boat at your disposal. From your personal floating island go water skiing, knee boarding, and tube riding.
Jungle Dawn
As dawn breaks and the mist rises through the canopy, explore the jungle as it awakens. In the company of an expert naturalist guide, you’ll learn about the intricacies of a habitat that is home to creatures as diverse as the puma, the impressive Black Howler monkey, the tenacious Jaguarundi and the vividly-colored Keel-Billed toucan.
Starlight Canoeing
The tranquil dark of the evening hours conceals a seldom experienced world of nocturnal activity. Observe and learn about our nocturnal flora and fauna as you canoe with your guide down jungle lined creeks. Headlights are supplied and unless otherwise requested, each guest is accompanied by an experienced local who will handle the paddling for you.
Water Sports
Get adventurous in a jet boat on our deserted 28 mile long spring fed lagoon. Try your hand at water skiing, knee boarding and tube rides; basic instruction can be provided if required.
Spotlight Safari
After dinner, climb aboard one of our comfortable custom built river safari boats and head out into the night. This exciting adventure gives you the opportunity to encounter anything from the Morelet’s crocodile to the elusive and endangered jaguar. All this plus close up views of some of Belize’s fascinating river birds as they roost on the water’s edge make this a not-to-miss adventure!
Cultural Immersion: The Milpa
Experience first hand the agricultural and food preparation methods of the ancient Maya. Learn about a technique that has survived more than 3000 years and is still in use today. Discover how local residents live in an environment almost devoid of electricity and refrigerators as you join a local family and assist with the preparation of a traditional Maya lunch.
Sunrise at Crab Catcher Lagoon
Enjoy nature watching over a sunrise breakfast in the expansive savannah wetlands – one of the area’s most interesting and awe inspiring habitats. Inaccessible by other means, airboats provide us access to this untouched wilderness area; home to crocodiles, numerous species of birds, river otters and other small mammals and amphibians. A truly incredible experience!
Sunset Cocktail Cruise
There can be no finer way to end the day than on the New River Lagoon surrounded by tropical forest and wildlife with a well-stocked cooler and your own personal bartender as you watch the sun disappear below the treetops.
Crocodile Nest Search
Head out on an airboat ride across the floodplains and through the shallows of the surrounding savannah wetlands and tributaries as we explore the area and search for the nesting sites of the Morelet’s crocodile. An experience not to be missed!
Sedan Chair Tours
Don’t let physical limitations stop you from enjoying our walking tours; our sedan chair tours allow you to get out on the trail and experience everything from Howler monkeys as they traverse the jungle canopy to sprawling savannah grasslands to towering Maya temples. By special arrangement only and additional charges may apply.
Night Walk
Experience the jungle’s night life under the evening stars, listen as the owls and bats come out to hunt and troops of Howler monkeys call to each other across the canopy. Depart with your guide after dinner. Headlights supplied.
Irish Creek at Dawn
After anchoring off Irish Creek and enjoying an outdoor breakfast it’s time for your guided canoe expedition down this unspoiled lush jungle lined creek. If canoeing is not your forte or perhaps you just want to focus on your surroundings, an experienced paddler will accompany you. Be on the lookout for otters, manatees, turtles, crocodiles, countless species of birds and even the elusive Jaguar which are often sighted in the area. A very special experience!

Your vacation time is precious and when planning how to best use it, you want to get it right the first time. The following are some things to consider when choosing your Belize jungle lodge:
Where is the Lodge? Is it situated in an area that is full of other lodges and hotels or is it secluded and private?
Lamanai Outpost Lodge is situated on the banks of a 28 mile long spring fed lagoon amid the remnants of a major Maya city. It is surrounded by an incredible variety of habitats that facilitate unsurpassed nature-based and soft-adventure activities that depart right from your cabana's doorstep without the need for day-trips. The nearest full-service lodge or hotel is over 70 miles away.
How crowded is the area and the attractions you will visit? Will you be rubbing shoulders with guests from the surrounding lodges or perhaps hundreds of tour company clients?
Unlike many other lodges who all share the same area and attractions, Lamanai Outpost is very much in a world of its own. Whether you are exploring the Maya ruins or watching nature awaken as the sun rises over Crab-Catcher Lagoon, it is almost guaranteed that it will be just you, your guide and a few friends that you have made at the Outpost.
How will you spend your day?
At most jungle lodges the more popular activities involve what are called day-trips. In plain English this means that you spend a large portion of your day in a vehicle as you are driven to and from the desired attraction. At Lamanai Outpost you can choose from the country’s largest range of fully guided soft-adventure experiences that start right from your cabana's doorstep and do not require day trips. The average guest at the Outpost embarks on three activities per day all of which are included in the package price.
Is the lodge focused on volume or quality?
Be it by keeping its number of cabanas below 20 or by limiting the number of guests on a tour to between 6 and 10 participants, Lamanai Outpost Lodge is totally focused upon the quality of your jungle experience. Our average activity departs with 4-6 guests plus staff.
Quality and reliability?
Lamanai Outpost is one of only a very few of Belize’s jungle lodges to have been repetitively featured on shows such as Wild Things, Discovery, Animal Planet, World Gone Wild and National Geographic Explorer. Voted Belize’s Hotel of the Year for 1999/2000, the Outpost is consistently utilized by numerous high-end travel companies and is widely recognized as one of Belize’s finest jungle lodges.
What will you get for your money?
With Belize’s better jungle lodges charging in the area of $350 per person per night plus taxes, gratuities, tour charges and a variety of other costs, it is often difficult to know what it will actually cost you when it’s time to check-out. At Lamanai Outpost our rates are very straightforward and the following is included in all of our package prices:

Unquestionably Belize’s Finest Birding Location
For the avid birder there is nothing in Belize that even comes close! Privately situated on the banks of a 28 mile long spring fed lagoon, amid major Maya ruins and an unequalled range of avifauna rich habitats, Lamanai Outpost Lodge is the obvious choice for your High-Count Belize birding expedition.
Almost 400 species have been recorded within a 3 mile radius of the lodge in a variety of readily accessible habitats that include vast Wetlands, Broadleaf Forest, Pine Savannah, Scrub and Riverine systems
It is not uncommon to achieve a highly diverse 200+ species count over a 3 day expedition.
Privately situated over 70 road miles from the nearest hotel or lodge, this pristine birding location is undisturbed by the large numbers of people and tour buses that can be encountered elsewhere.
At the Outpost no day trips are required and no time is wasted transiting to your next birding location as all of the surrounding habitats can be accessed in minutes. The average birder undertakes two to three specialized and fully guided birding expeditions per day. In addition you may elect to join any of our Natural History tours or expeditions; see the activities page for a listing and departure schedule.
Our guides are highly experienced, they share your passion for birding and you will find them totally focused on expanding life list and determined to
go that extra mile as you seek out that special bird that you have been waiting so long to encounter.
Our guides carry Swarovski spotting scopes along with a spare pair of binoculars should the need arise; our gift shop also stocks camera film along with water/fog proof binoculars.
Motorized birding safaris across the Pine Savannah and onto the Crooked Tree Nature Reserve will be available in early 2005. Crooked Tree is approximately six nautical miles from the eastern shore of the New River Lagoon.
Whilst all of our activities will provide you with an opportunity to see special birds, if you have a keen interest in Neo-tropic Avifauna there are a few activities that should not be missed. Remember that Belize is a migration stop-over point so certain species are only sighted at particular times of the year. After you have reviewed the Outpost’s impressive range of birding expeditions, you might want to print our species checklist for a breakdown of what you can expect at the various times of year. Please feel free to email us at birding@lamanai.com should you require species specific information or perhaps some assistance with planning your Belize expedition.
Structuring Your Expedition
Upon arrival at the Lodge you will meet with your assigned birding guide to review your target species and to plan your itinerary; this is a very personal process and the timing and nature of your expeditions will be tailored to meet your specific goals. In addition to your specialized birding pursuits you are welcome to join any of our scheduled Natural History expeditions of which is included in your package pricing and are listed on the Activities page of this website.
Early Starts: All of our sunrise expeditions begin with juice, coffee, tea, cocoa and
snacks such as fruit, cake or muffins that are served in the lounge. All motorized expeditions carry a range of complimentary drinks. Snacks and cocktails are served on some of our sunset and late afternoon outings.
Airboat Birding Safari (am/pm): This activity gives us access to those hard to reach places, namely the wetlands and marshes, normally inaccessible by foot, boat or canoe. Expect to see flocks of Wood Storks, White Ibis, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Cattle Egret, Little and Great Blue Herons, Roseate Spoonbills, Bitterns, Black necked Stilts, Muscovy and Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks. Excellent sightings of the endangered Jabiru Stork are very common.
Jungle Birding Expeditions (am/pm): The dawn jungle chorus will take birders to
new heights of euphoria!! Trogons, Woodcreepers, Motmots, Tanagers, Toucans, Honeycreepers, Parrots, and Woodpeckers are but a few of what you can expect on these early morning expeditions. Forest walks are also available in the afternoons and may give birders glimpses of Tinamous, Collared Aracaris and Raptors coming into the forest to roost.
Sunrise Canoe Birding (am): Early starts are what birding is all about and 5am will see you canoeing across the lagoon towards Dawson’s Creek in search of Boat
billed herons, Green herons, Bare-throated Tiger herons and the Black-crowned Night Herons. These exquisite herons along with Vireos, Warblers and Flycatchers are normally seen. As with all of our canoe based expeditions an experienced canoeist can attend to the paddling for you should you wish to avoid the distraction.
Shrub-Forest Birding (am/pm): Shrub-forest is a disturbed habitat that recovers fairly quickly in the Neotropics if left to Mother Nature’s own devices. This habitat yields a variety of fruiting and flowering plants, trees and vines, which in turn attract many birds. Emeralds, Manakins, Elaenias, Bentbills, Euphonias, Wrens and Orioles can all be seen competing for food in the low forest canopy.
Headlight Canoeing and Spotlight Safari - After Dinner: These two night safaris give you an amazing opportunity to see roosting waders along with some of
the New River’s more elusive nocturnal and diurnal species up close and personal. The Northern Potoo, Yucatan Nightjar, Common Pauraque, Grey–necked Wood Rail, Sungrebe, Agami Heron, Kingfishers, Kites and a variety of mammals, manatee, crocodiles and other wildlife are regularly sighted. Unless otherwise requested, each participant on the Headlight Canoeing Safari will be accompanied
by an experienced canoeist who will handle the paddling as we feel that this incredible experience is best absorbed with a minimum of distractions.
Savannah Birding Walk (am/pm): The contrast between the dense Broadleaf Forest and the open Pine Savannah is dramatic with respect to both terrain and the variety of bird life. Here you will find some of the much sought after Yucatan endemics; Yucatan Jay, Yellow-lored Parrot, Red-vented Woodpecker, Black Catbird and Yucatan Flycatcher to name but a few. Other feathered inhabitants found in the savannah are Doves, Quails, Sparrows, Falcons and Hawks.
Owl Tracking – After Dinner: After a relaxing dinner this is an exciting way to spend your evening; audibly tracking nocturnal birds through ancient Maya territory! Look out for the Vermiculated Screech-owl, Ferruginous Pygmy-owl, Mottled owl and Stygian owl. Nightjars, Common Pauraque and some of the smaller nocturnal mammals are also often seen.
Dawn Riverboat Birding (am): Day break will find you scanning the reed beds of the New River in one of our riverboats as you search for some of the shy water fowl species that inhabit the area. The mass of reeds and water lilies are host to the secretive Yellow-breasted Crake, Ruddy Crake, Spotted Rail and Northern Jacana. Towering overhead, on either side of the river, are giant Bullet and Provision Bark trees in which Olive-throated Parakeets, Pigeons, Trogons, Hawks can also be seen.
Birding in the Shadow of The Maya (pm):
Probably one of the most awe inspiring birding locations is within the ancient Maya city itself; imagine being atop one of the highest Preclassic structures in the Maya World - 112ft – as you observe Red-lored Parrots and Bat Falcons fly past at eye level. Rufous-tailed Jacamars, Puffbirds, Tanagers and the Collared Forest Falcon are but a few that you might see.
‘Milpa’ or Scrub Birding (am/pm):
The ‘Milpa’ is the local term used to describe the ‘slash and burn’ farming pastures. This habitat is home to a variety of otherwise difficult to find birds. Buntings, Grosbeaks, Hummingbirds and the uncommon Masked Tityra are all seen regularly on this morning activity.
Irish Creek Canoeing (am):
After 40 minutes of shore birding aboard a spacious 30ft pontoon boat we will arrive at this remarkably pristine and seldom visited patch of birding habitat and transfer from the boat to canoes. The riverine forest that lines Irish Creek is untouched and is host to an abundance of rare and uncommon forest dwellers along with the difficult-to-find Amazon Kingfisher and Black-collared Hawk. These as well as Red-capped Manakins, Water Thrushes, Green Jays, Boat billed Herons and Parrots makes this a not to miss morning birding activity! If canoeing is not your forte or perhaps you just want to focus on the birding, an experienced canoeist will accompany you and attend to the paddling.
Sunset Birding Cruise (pm):
This is the most relaxing way to bird at Lamanai Outpost Lodge. As you meander up the New River with binoculars and ‘gin tonic’ in hand, Limpkins, Kingfishers, Least Bitterns and Green Herons can be seen along the waters edge. While above flocks of Woodstorks, White Ibises and Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks disappear into a golden-orange sunset. A magical way to end a hard day of birding in the Neotropics.
Research Participation (am):
Assist researchers as they endeavor to better understand and document the area’s resident and migratory inhabitants via mist netting and banding in a variety of habitats.

Weather:
Very similar to Southern Florida but with a slightly hotter Summer and a milder Winter
Northern Belize’s Wet Season – June through November - is considerably milder than that experienced in Southern Belize;
rain is sporadic and it impacts our activities and services very little
For a variety of reasons that include our location, level of preparedness, level of self sufficiency and the rarity of hurricanes
in Belize, we do not consider them to be an issue
Special Occasions:
We routinely accommodate events such as honeymoons, anniversaries and birthdays
Weddings can be accommodated via special arrangement
Special Interests:
Accommodating them is one of the things we do best
Birding, orchids, the Maya, cultural experiences, educational programs and a variety of others are routinely accommodated
Customized Family & Small Group Itineraries:
This is another area that we specialize in; we can develop and provide soft-adventure itineraries that are simply not possible elsewhere in the country
Special pricing and arrangements for special interest groups and families are available upon request
Activities:
We offer an unparalleled and extensive range of experiences – see activities and birding pages for a complete listing
Our activities are carefully arranged so that we do not group persons that are incompatible either by way of personality or
areas of interest
All activities are conducted with very small groups; the average is around four to six guests and our maximum is ten
Guest Type, Age and Disabilities:
Lamanai Outpost is suited to guests of all types and ages
With prior consultation we can accommodate, and are very happy to attend to, people with physical disabilities or special needs; we have successfully done so many times in the past and have developed methods that enable such guest to experience the majority of our activities
Additional charges may apply to itineraries for disabled persons
Although Lamanai Outpost is primarily an adult and family destination, student groups and the like can be accommodated by
special arrangement and timing
Baby Sitters & Laundry:
Can be easily arranged and are of excellent quality, additional charges apply
A same day washed, dried and folded laundry service is available at US$15 per load
Private Transfers and Activities:
Our ‘Private Option’ upgrade ensures private activities, guiding and transfers
A 50% loading is applied to packages of this type
Swimming in the Lagoon:
The water quality is excellent, we have never experienced a problem and there are no known health risks
Although there are crocodiles in the lagoon you have more chance of being killed by a falling coconut than being bitten by a
crocodile
The lagoon is utilized extensively by swimmers and in living memory there has not been a crocodile/human incident in the lagoon
Communications:
International calls can be placed via AT&T, MCI, Sprint, a variety of credit cards or our local telephone company; a fax service is available
Internet access is available via lodge’s or your our own laptop
The lodge’s phones are attended 24x7 – 501-223-3578
Fishing:
Is one of our standard activities; see attached listing
We have a reasonable selection of tackle available but it does not include fly fishing equipment
Guests wishing to fly fish for Tarpon should bring their own equipment
Health Concerns:
Although the chance of contracting malaria is incredibly slim we do recommend that you consult your healthcare professional. Over a 12 year period and more than 20,000 guests, we have seen two cases which may well have been contracted elsewhere elsewhere.
There are no other health issues that we are aware of or have experienced
Reservations are handled by our Florida Office which is open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday
Lamanai Outpost Lodge can be contacted directly at any time for assistance or information; our phones are attended 24x7
