Fruit Vendor in San Pedro, List of exotic and popular Belizean fruits of old
Where are our exotic and popular Belizean fruits of OLD?
by Hector Silva
Not too long ago there were a variety of local fruits which filled the appetite.
For myself, I only ate apples and grapes at Christmas time and sometimes a pear or apricot, but today Apples and Grapes and foreign plums are at the Market every day.
My choice of fruits were Parson Brown Oranges or Washington. Sweet Limes, Mandarine, and Tangarine. Mangoes of so many varieties. Mammy Fruit and Sapodilla. Custard Apple, Saramuyo, - Sour Sop with Condensed Milk. A variety of Plums. (Tuspana, May Plum, Caimito, Kenep,) CRABOO, Monkey Apple, (Tuspee) Baboon Cap, BUCUT, SUPA, TUKI, BREE BREE by the river side. What about sweet Cashew and so many other little fruits like PIN WIN, CAPULIN, SWEET JICAMA, HONEY DEW MELON, COCO PLUM, and so many others we found in the bush. Sikiya and Chanak. You know the Bribri. WAMA on the river bank? Succotz and Jicama fruit too.
MOST OF THESE FRUITS WERE EDIBLE FOR OUR TASTE DELIGHT and MANY WERE MEDICINAL, (Bucut and Sour Sop)
This is what makes us different from many other people.
They eat what they produce, WHILE we prefer to eat what they produce. A lady told me once. "If foreign people cook well seasoned grass and put it in a Can or Bottle, WE EAT AM SIR."
